LA, needs to beware of the Ides of March April, err never mind, you have till the 18th to file this year. At any rate, don't sleep with your mother.

Actually, I probably overreacted. After all, Tennessee's teams are the Volunteers. Still, I'm a WWII buff, and I don't think football players should adopt motivation campaigns likening themselves to real people who made the ultimate sacrifice, some of whom are still alive. They're playing a game, for heaven's sake, not fighting for their lives. It's just cheesy.

(If you think that Bronco, in adopting this campaign, is thinking about Henry V, then you have a high opinion of him indeed. I know that many of those who post here wince when they see Bronco pull stuff like this.)

And, although I hate to shatter woot's illusions about being the smartest, best-read kid in the room, I can recite the high points of the St. Crispin's Day speech from memory. It was a Neal Maxwell favorite, which I am sure makes it all the more significant to the wootster.

What's the corresponding "hall" for statements made here that Ute fans think are over the top? What? We don't have one? What an appalling lack of symmetry for a CougarUte forum.

Bolded for funny. But yes, I agree with you in general that athletes should not be compared to soldiers, and that either way "Band of Brothers" refers to soldiers.

Just the opposite. I would have posted in the "Utefans say the Darndest Things" thread but no one has started one - probably for fear that they would end up copying/pasting every other post.

It is part of the intro to the Sunday Bronco Mendenhall show on KSL

Granted it is misquoted using lucky instead happy. Perhaps your outrage extends to adopting a theatrical adaptation of the Battle of Agincourt for football purposes?

                  But not needle-necked!

I take it back, guys, your football team is just like the stripling warriors, the 101st Airborne, and the guys Shakespeare described. What they are doing is every bit as important. They are "terrible as an army with banners," etc.

My favorite part of that post is how you defer to USS Utah to provide the outrage, as if his opinion gives it more legitimacy. Classic passive aggressive behavior. Seriously one of the funniest things I've seen today.

It gets better because USSUtah doesn't take the bait.

Hey, USS Utah's actually been in uniform. A military uniform, that is, which is almost as significant as a BYU football uniform. He said:

First the recreation of the flag raising on Mt. Suribachi and now this? It's a good thing these idiots are only former rivals so I don't have to care anymore.
I wonder if Helaman's stripling warriors had an Honor Code? Could any of them block or tackle?

Are you sure? I thought he was just a military history buff, but never served. I could be wrong about that. Either way, Goatnapper called you a string-puller and he was a cadet who would not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.

Wait a minute, isn't Utah the school that has a Ute Warrior as its symbol?

And even worse, I now see this:

"I think both coaches are right. They'll have their hands full because we are going to come out banging. I think the same with us. They are going to give us a game," said Utah safety Brian Blechen. "I know it's going to be a war and I'm going to have to be ready for four quarters."
                              http://www.deseretnews.com/article/7...y-matched.html

I am certain that you will be running right over to UF.N to decry your school's use of these symbols of war when they are just playing a game. Feel free to link to your post here, as I don't get over there that often.

I was particularly distressed about this as I thought that comparing athletes to warriors started and ended with BYU athletics. I didn't think that any other school anywhere would be classless enough to use words like "Warrior", "Soldier", "battlefield", and "War" when describing a silly sporting event.
