Except for Tait and Smith I'm not sure any of those numbers are worth premature disability and death and giving up all other gameful employment.

      Game´ful (gām´ful)

It's sounding more and more like AS will be back with the Niners. He's willing to restructure to stay around. Here is Singletary last week...

Singletary said he is focusing on a possible QB competition matching Hill against Smith. He said the competition will not be a drawn-out affair. He said it will also be different than a year ago because Hill and Smith will be on equal footing. Singletary said there was only one QB who knew the system a year ago, and that was J.T. O'Sullivan...

Smith is seen as a player, when healthy, who has better physical skills. But Hill has appeared to show a better feel for that game. But because Hill can't show everything he has during the course of a routine practice, is he at a disadvantage in an open competition?

"That's a very fair question," Singletary said. "I think the most important thing, there are intangibles that we'll see going into it. We'll measure it in such a way that it will be fair. There's not an exact science to it. We'll pick the right guy."

I'm especially okay with that if it means the 49ers won't be taking Mark Sanchez in round one.

There is no way the Niners take a QB in the first round (10). Singletary wants a run-first offense; look for them to employee the QB-as-manager scheme next season.

About half of the mock's I've seen (which granted, mean nothing because most of them are clueless) have them taking Sanchez. That would kill me, mostly because I don't think Sanchez is worth the pick at 10, and also because I think there are other players at 10 that SF could really use.

I'd love the 9ers to be able to land a top-flight pass rusher, but I don't think that there is really that type of player in the draft this year. I think they could find a top-caliber tackle to pair with Joe Staley and help solidify the offensive line. Or, I wouldn't be too terribly upset if they decided to trade down and could land a WR like Harvin and a D-lineman or a stud safety.

The guy I really wanted at 10 (Taylor Mays) decided to go back to school.

I should also add that should Stafford slide to 10 (very very unlikely) I wouldn't be terribly upset with that pick.

I've seen the same thing in the national media. None of the beat writers or management has signaled they'll go after a QB - especially in light of their new philosophy.

Here is Kawakami, in another piece on AS...

And Singletary is not going to break the bank to import someone such as Matt Cassel (or use the No. 10 overall pick on USC's Mark Sanchez) because QB just isn't an all-important position in his run-dominated offense.

Maybe that's the perfect chance for Smith to show he can hand off 30 times, audible out of bad play calls and stay away from sacks, fumbles and interceptions.

"We don't have to throw the ball a million times," Singletary said during the 49ers' "State of the Franchise" event Monday. "We can sit on that thing, pound it, throw it when we have to."

Yes, a deliberate pun on my part. I'm glad you got it.
