I wasn't offended at all. I think he'd be a great coach, but don't think the fans would be quick to embrace him.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostHe made a sincere and humble public apology. Ute players know how to do that.

Meh. We're not talking astrophysics. How hard is it to teach a guy not to get jammed, run a crisp route, catch with your hands, put them on the Juggs machine, etc. In that role, I'd look for a recruiter first, good teacher second. Even with that, there's nothing we know about Ben Cahoon that would suggest he would be a great teacher of those skills.Originally posted by kccougar View PostRecruiting and being popular with the players certainly are good things, but what BYU really needs right now is someone that can teach receiving skills.

I agree with Santa Jaria 100%. I think Doman is a great recruiter because he has the proverbial "it" his teammates always raved about him. Who did Mahe ask to give him a blessing prior to the Utah game? I'm racking my brain to recall a receiver or TE that I can remember a receiver that was seemingly as universally liked (due to the nature of the positions, I'm sure QBs will always get more respect/love). Chad Lewis is the only name that comes to mind. Cahoon is an unknown to me. I loved him as a receiver but no nothing about his personality. I don't think Collie would fit that mold at all. My sense is Austin was always respected, but not necessarily liked by some of the team.Originally posted by jay santos View PostIn that role, I'd look for a recruiter first, good teacher second.
Actually, Reno Jr. Mahe's name just popped into my head. Great receiver, LOVED by his teammates, great poly connection, NFL experience. Hmmmm.

Option 1: Be a pos coach for a young OC with little chance to become the OC anytime soon (assuming Doman lasts or doesn't become HC).
Option 2: Be mentored by Norm for a few years, then OC once he's ready.
Is this really a choice?I intend to live forever.
So far, so good.

Reno is one my top 5 favorite BYU players ever. I think it was the 2001 game where he came back fromthe dead with help from Brandonappendicitis and made 3 or 4 HUGE catches in the comeback against Utah. One of my favorite plays was him making a big catch across the middle, getting nearly decapitated by the safety (easily a 15 yarder with today's rules) popping up immediately and signaling 1st down.

I never said there was a big problem with Higgins. If I were to replace a guy like him it would probably be first about recruiting and/or fitting in with the coaching leadership and second about ability to teach WR's. Unless the guy's obviously a dope. In which case I don't know how he'd ever get in a position to land the job at BYU in the first place.Originally posted by kccougar View PostThen what's the problem with Higgins?
Honestly, when you see a team with great WR's, do you think 1) they have good players or 2) they must have a great WR coach? Has any WR coach ever developed a superior reputation for developing WR's?

I think the A-Rod rumors started with an assumption that Chow coming to Utah would mean that A-Rod would be out. Since it is clear that he wants to (read: wife is making him) stay in state, his best bet would be to move to Provo.Originally posted by Brian View PostOption 1: Be a pos coach for a young OC with little chance to become the OC anytime soon (assuming Doman lasts or doesn't become HC).

I'm sure that if he has the chance to stay on staff at Utah, he won't go anywhere."It's devastating, because we lost to a team that's not even in the Pac-12. To lose to Utah State is horrible." - John White IV

Yes, I guess the assumption was that he could stay, if he wanted. However, Norm might want to clean house.Originally posted by kccougar View PostI think the A-Rod rumors started with an assumption that Chow coming to Utah would mean that A-Rod would be out. If Whittingham is looking to have a new OC for next year, in my opinion, it really doesn't matter whether it is Norm Chow or not, Aaron Roderick will be gone and not because he was let go but I just don't think a young guy like him who might have hopes of something bigger or better will accept a demotion on the same team. To me there is a respect issue, where Roderick might feel it hard for his players to respect him after he takes the demotion.
