  • Stanford to interview Chris Pettersen

This would be a slam dunk hire for Stanford. With Chris Petersen Stanford could fulfill SeattleUte's sleeping giant prediction for Stanford. Oregon would have some serious competition next year in the Pac-12 with Luck back and Petersen at Stanford.

This was just getting a bit of buzz on Friday, looks like it's now real.

I cannot possibly see Petersen saying no.

    He's a Northern California native.
    It will pay him more.
He gets to move from Boise, Idaho to Palo Alto.

Unless some Boise St booster has photos of him doing lines of coke off of one of his player's lower back, I cannot fathom how he says no to this.

Yeah, hooker pics wouldn't be enough

          Sounds like a slam dunk.

Every other head coach who has left BSU has done great!

            Come on now Jarid.

            We ALL know the following:
            1) if she is ALIVE, she is an 'escort' or even 'exotic entertainer'
            2) if she is DEAD, she's a hooker.

You were correct in your prioritization however. The only way he won't get the job is... "if I'm caught in bed with either a dead girl or a live boy" (to channel LA ex-Gov Edwin Edwards).

I saw a little blurb on Harbaugh this morning.

In 4 seasons at the Farm, he went 29-21, had 2 losing seasons, went to the Sun bowl and lost, then went to the Orange Bowl this year and won.

So after all the dust settled Harbaugh left Stanford just North of .500, zero conference titles, and one bowl win.

No wonder he took the money and ran.

Rightly or wrongly, the locals are drawing parallels with Harbaugh and Bill Walsh who left Stanford after two seasons (both bowl winners). Walsh's first two years with the Niners were 2-14 and 6-10. The third year was the epic Super Bowl season, due in no small measure to his handing over the offensive reins to Joe Montana. Harbaugh became a great coach when Luck took over.

I think Harbaugh will be a decent pro coach, but he'll need a QB to look Walsh-like, and at the moment there is none on the horizon.

But keep in mind - Harbaugh BUILT this thing. Yes, Luck has been phenomenal but Harbaugh recruited like a damn banshee the last two years - two top 20 classes for a program that was nowhere near the top 20. So he took a program that was 4-8 with 6 blowout losses in 2007, and 1-11 with eight blowout losses in 2006 and managed to pull in consecutive top 20 recruiting classes.

Luck was great but he didn't do it alone.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasnt the last season in Tall Stick the best season they've had, ever? Stanford hadnt been a top 25 team in... How long? He isn't a sure thing but no coaching hire is IMO. And yes, he does need a QB. But if he can make Todd Mortensen an NFL prospect, I think he will be fine.

Boise is going to be interesting to watch. If Peterson leaves, they lost their OC, and another O. coach I believe. I wonder if the OC that left would come back as head coach?

If Stanford really goes after Peterson I can't imagine him saying no.

                        I can.

Here is the thing about Stanford; they really don't get much local fan support. Stanford sports will always play eighth fiddle in the Bay Area, behind the Niners, Raiders, Giants, A's, W's, and even the Sharks.

In college sports, most of the locals are Cal fans way before Stanford backers. Some of this sentiment will always be the case - public vs. private, out-of-state smart kids vs. local smart kids, etc. The local youngsters don't rock the Stanford gear growing up, but everyone has at least one Cal hat.

Even with all the success this season, Stanford always has *at least* 10K empty seats at every home game, and that's after they reduced the capacity to only 50K.

Do they have huge funds and endowment? Yes. Is it an appealing school with an internationally recognized name? Of course! But they will not retain greatness in the long term, because all of their good football coaches leave for a bigger audience and support.

As a Nor Cal kid who went to Cal my frosh year before transferring after my mission, I can understand this comment. But people buy Cal hats in larger numbers not because it points to the university but because it points to the state and the bear which are symbols of Nor Cal identity that go far beyond university affiliation.

If Peterson is who I think he is - i.e. a Nor Cal dude being offered the best college coaching job in Nor Cal -he will accept this job. Whatever the deficiencies might be in the Stanford program, they can't come close to the benefits for someone who is a Nor Cal native.

Add in the DC Wilcox that was there in 08. Lots of guys moving up from Boise.

I would think PeterSon would hold out for a better job, if he really wants the P12 UCLA will be open in the next couple of years. If/when Chip leaves Peterson would be welcome back to Eugene with open arms.

Is UCLA REALLY a better job? Sure it's been a better football program historically than Stanford. But not that much better. And Stanford actually has a better financial situation with private side donors who are committed at a time when public sector commitment is being slashed.

We'll see, but I don't buy that UCLA is necessarily a better gig than Stanford, which is obviously (with a slight but clear edge over Berkeley) the academic cream of the PAC 10 crop.
