Born in 74. Started paying attention to byu about 1980. Mid to late 80s before I started paying attention to national football. Usc seemed sort of irrelevant. Just saying perception, that's all.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostSince 1970 (not sure what year you were born) SC has played in 17 Rose Bowls.
That is by far more than any other PAC or B10 school. At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

I hear you. It was considered a dry spell for SC fans, as well, but I think that has more to do with elevated expectations. No question that SC in the 2000s was much more successful than SC in the 80s and 90s.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostBorn in 74. Started paying attention to byu about 1980. If anything Washington is the new "USC," with the mass exodus to Seattle.
Oregon is going to be able to put their own stamp on the Pac 12 by dominating the Northern Division for years to come. I also feel certain that Phil Knights legacy will continue for a long time, when a huge (billion+) endowment will be announced at his death. With money from "heaven" and a north/south split, I think Oregon will hold it's own for a long time.

Oregon has won b2b PAC titles and is playing for the title on Monday. This would seem to be a pretty strong argument that they are the top dog in the conference.
I dont get the Phil Knight mumbo jumbo. They have always had Phil Knight money and have cashed in zero Rose Bowl wins and a couple of PAC titles. They have nice facilities but people make too much out of the Nike money.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

BTW, Triplet, I concede that the question "Is Oregon the New USC" is a dumb one. It's just the title of the piece I linked to. There's only one USC, love them or hate them. I don't feel strongly either way, but simply observe USC as a phenomenon. And I have many close Trojan fan friends and colleagues.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

In my view Oregon has some ground to cover before becoming the new USC or joining college football's elite.
USC: 769-312-54 .711 - 7 national titles
Oregon: 564-467-47 .547
For reference:
Washington: 663-404-36 .621 - 1 national title
Stanford: 665-452-52 .595
UCLA: 521-356-37 .594
California: 629-482-51 .566“Not the victory but the action. Not the goal but the game. In the deed the glory.”

It goes without saying that Oregon lacks the tradition of a perennial college football powerhouse. My point was that it's got a little ground to cover before it even makes it up to the league of the generational BCS-era powers.Originally posted by Paperback Writer View PostIn my view Oregon has some ground to cover before becoming the new USC or joining college football's elite.

I could see Oregon being a power for a long time. Phil Knight has dumped 300 million into their football team in the last several years, to the point where a lot of blue chippers visit Oregon just to see the ridiculous facilities even if they don't plan on committing. They have an enormous advantage that way.
17 and 18-year-olds are easily swayed by shiny things, and Oregon's facilities most certainly shine. They're only going to get better too. I have to think that a new or greatly expanded stadium is on the horizon. 54k just isn't bigtime.
