The MWC was a good and necessary thing when it was invented. I, like YO, will miss the team we are leaving behind. They are the teams that I grew up watching us play against.

The tv contract become an albatross that ultimately brought the conference to ruins.

My ADR6300 wishes to congratulate all the BYU fans on the board.

I won't miss underachieving loser programs like SDSU and UNLV. I'll also miss things like consistent scheduling, conference standings, players of the week and an interest in how conference mates are doing.
I won't miss any of the MWC teams. There is nothing exciting about beating any of those teams. I'm beyond bored with them.

Based on Holmoe's criteria for teams to schedule, I suspect we won't see many of our old MWC mates. BYU is scheduling nationally prominent programs, like institutions and institutions where LDS people reside. As a result, here is how I rank our old conference mates on a very sophisticated likely/unlikely scale:

AFA: Likely -- They are a like insititution with their honor code and difficult academics.
CSU: Unlikely -- CSU is a state school in a state where LDS members can see BYU easily when BYU plays AFA. Not like in scholastics or any other category.
UNLV: Likely -- There is a reason BYU sells out the Vegas bowl. Accordingly, BYU will play UNLV to keep the contact with its fans in Vegas.
SDSU: Likely -- BYU has a great relationship with the San Diego area LDS members and SDSU is an opportunity to play there.
UNM: Unlikely -- Not many Mormons, not like institutions.
UU: Likely -- Goes without saying
TCU: Push-- Similar institution and LDS member support on the plus side. On the minus side, lots of schools in Texas that are also like institutions or nationally significant.

AFA always rates as unlikely so long as Army and Navy occupy two-thirds of the non-conference schedule. AFA can also get bigger games than BYU, and Calhoun likes the FCS patsy to open the season with a win. CSU is far more likely. UNLV and SDSU give BYU the most bang for the buck.

                Incorrect.

AFA and BYU have said as much.

Good argument against AFA but CSU is not more likely. Colorado State does not seem to have ever gotten a big turnout for BYU games (unlike AFA). Also, AFA will need at least one and probably two extra OOC games next year. I expect the BYU/AFA OOC games to begin in 2011 completing BYU's schedule with a road game at AFA.

There's no room in 2011. Maybe 2012. A lot depends on whether AFA has 8 or 9 conference games. With 8, it becomes more likely, but I don't see BYU ever getting a spot when AFA has 9 conference games.

What channel was that again? The mtn? Or Versus? or CBS-C? or sometimes ESPN-3? And in a blue moon, BYUTV?

I agree with you--I think BYUTV will be waaay more dedicated to BYU sports than the unholy combination of crappy regional channels that we've seen.

I also with you like that BYU will be beholden to no channel. And the ESPN contract has the "piss-or-get-off" clause-- if they don't broadcast it, BYU will.

I am glad that we're done. I had a good friend from HS who is a UCLA alum and she was just shaking her head over the MWC and what has occurred. I filled her in on some other things she wasn't aware of as someone who doesn't have an interest in the conference and she couldn't believe that we stayed so long in it.

As we're on the way out now it's kind of fun to muse about what could have been. I have told DNF this, but I truly believe that if we had a strong commissioner BYU, Utah and now TCU would still be a part of the MWC. The MWC would have a respectable TV contract. And we would have a BCS bid. Maybe I am up in the night about that, but I really feel with different leadership the MWC would be much different than it is today.

Mmmm. No. Bronco's not a bullshitter. When asked the same question about New Mexico, he responded in the negative. And he said it with civility.

Of course Bronco wants to continue playing AFA. He's worn their ass like a hat (save for this year). I'm speaking from Calhoun's side of things. AFA has no real reason to continue playing BYU. That won't keep Calhoun from saying otherwise, because he's not going to publicly say his players/program doesn't want to play a certain team. That's bad PR for a military school, to say the least.
