I was "there" for this one (in the MTC). I was listening to my Chinese language tapes on my walkman, and everybody kept asking me for the score of the game. NOBODY would believe I was doing my language study. The crowd noise was amazing that day. It must have been an exceptionally entertaining game.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View Post
4. BYU beats #1 Miami
Three weeks later I was walking back to the dorms with my companion. He knew little about the history of the state, and nothing at all about the U, and I was telling him a few tidbits. I made a historically accurate comment in passing that the U was founded by Brigham Young, and that Paul James and most of the church presidency went to Utah and not BYU.
An elder in front of us whirled around, red-faced and with hands clinched, looking as though I had insulted his sister, and said, "Elder, I don't like fighting and I don't like violence, but you are starting to piss me off..!" (Note this kid looked fairly tough, but he was about 5'8" and maybe 160#. I was a 6'6", 215# Rugby player, and was in the best shape of my life - but I am a pacifist at heart, so I couldnt stop laughing).
My companion calmly said, "I am from Oregon, and I LOVE the Ducks!" (that was the day the Ducks doubled up the Cougars on the road...)
The kid spun back around and stomped off. I guess it was a sore subject for him.

I still remember the naked lady walking out and laying down on the field, pre-game, at one of the games in the late 80's. I was somewhere between the 'I don't even realize what I am looking at, the 'ha ha, I can see her bum' and 'ooh that feels tingly' phases of life. Obviously this was pre-cellphone camera...Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostHave you heard from anyone that was sitting in the North End Zone near the Topless Woman?

There is also the reverse phenomenon where there is something intensely popular and when it becomes embarrassing it's tough to find anyone who was ever a part of it. For instance, Vanilla Ice sold over 7 million copies of the single "Ice Ice Baby". It's interesting that you rarely meet anyone who ever owned it, let alone liked it. As for me, I was on a mission when it came out but I used to hear it in a mall we crossed through every day and I thought it sounded awesome as a 20 year old kid who wasn't allowed to listen to anything but afterglow. There's a good chance I would have bought it.

One other all-time classic came to life during John Kerry's last senatorial campaign. In a campaign stop he told everybody how he was a HUGE Red Sox fan and had been there the day Bill Buckner booted the ball at first base, causing the Red Sox to lose the World Series. (FTR he has owned season tickets for years)
Similar to others listed in this thread, hundreds of thousands of people claim to have attended this game, including one (at the time) Jr Senator from Mass.
The only problem was he was documented by vote records to have been in the Senate in DC at game time. Had he left after the vote and hopped immediately onto a flight, he still would have missed the game.
(- For the record, and to prove this isnt just a political hit, I thought John Kerry was as smug and condescending a person as is humanly possible, truly he was deserving of the title 'Boston Brahmin'. He could care less about his constituents. Calls to his office by Mass voters requesting help for issues routinely go unanswered.
I also think Ted Kennedy was an excellent public servant, a good-hearted person, and had a phenominally resourceful staff. They returned every letter and every phone call, and were as helpful as they could possibly be.
Despite their similar voting record the two senators could not have been more diametrically opposed in terms of actually serving their constituents.)

I bought it, liked it, and still like it, and probably can still sing along to most of the lyrics. Just check out the hook while my D-Shay revolves it.Originally posted by SteelBlue View PostThere is also the reverse phenomenon where there is something intensely popular and when it becomes embarrassing it's tough to find anyone who was ever a part of it. BYU-Miami was my first time in Cougar Stadium. I watched the game with Randy Reid's pre-mission gf. She was on the track team- dumped him, was never really interested in me and ended up marrying some 3rd team FB player. I was one of the first few to jump on the field in the North endzone and can make myself out on one of youtube videos putting a wicked spin move on an orange vested security dude.

Hook: "A musical or lyrical phrase that is easily remembered"
He is most likely talking about his DJ spinning his turn tables.*Banned*

I've never owned that album. I was in my post mission too cool for pop phase. However, I have caught Vanilla's home improvement show in the DIY network and find it entertaining.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostObviously you can not still recite the lyrics.
