I hate to make a Majerus reference here, but he was brilliant about some things. When asked once how he taught his players to be unselfish, he said simply, "The bench."

If Bronco really has problems with Heaps' attitude, he should sit him down, not adopt that strange 2 QB system or make elliptical criticisms.

(By the way, switching back to hoops, my biggest problem with Boylen is that he hasn't used the bench either.)

He's thrown about everything else, why not the bench...ZING!

B-. You've raised the bar on yourself so high that we all know you can do much, much better than that.

Met the man once and he was as cordial a person as I've met. His investment in the program is nothing short of complete and it's a shame that he's not had better results. How's that?

No, no, no. I meant that you can zing me much better than you did. It was a pretty good zing, but only a B-. Don't go getting all civil and classy on me now, hear?

Actually, in the case of Jordan Cyphers, he used it. Which is what drove me absolutely batty -- Boylen used it selectively. And that he used the bench on a kid, in favor of playing someone with an even worse attitude and work ethic is Exhibit A behind my mindset, which is it's gonna take a lot for Boylen to prove to me he's the right person for the job.

                I think this is insightful.

"According to PK, Bronco absolutely detested the Heaps press conference and the fact that Heaps had a PR rep.

Bottom line...Riley is Bronco's kind of guy...Heaps is not. Heaps presupposing that he would be the man must be driving Bronco crazy."

I remember Bronco making multiple references this past winter about "kids who come in with entitlement issues". He's made several non-football anti-Heaps and/or overly syrupy comments about Nelson's leadership and mental strength.

I've been surprised at the quotes just the last 24 hours from Bronco since Nelson's gone down about how upsetting this is.

Is this is a side story that will fester?
This is the first thing I've ever read about Bronco that makes me like him.

There is NOTHING about that Heaps press conference that is good or virtuous. It was 100% abnoxious and immature. Also, very bad for his character.

Maybe if you're LeBron James it's okay to strut like that at age 18. Heaps is not LeBron James gifted. He is a work in progress, and work ethic and humility are his means to success.

Bronco wanted Riley to have the job. Bronco still holds a grudge about the press conference and doesn't really know how to handle a kid like Heaps. BYU doesn't typically get the ultra-talented kids that are self assured. Heaps is really confident, but he's not arrogant by any stretch of the imagination. Bronco loves the underdog and is having trouble embracing the favorite. It bothers him that Heaps doesn't have to jump through the usual hoops to prove himself. Jake at 60% effort is better than Riley at 110%. I really hope Bronco gets a grip on this or he may really hinder Jake's progress.

Almost every top recruit does it, but okay. Did you whine about Manti Teo's press conference?

You guys have great imaginations. Jake is as much a Bronco recruit as he is a Doman recruit. Furthermore, Jake may have wanted to come in as the man, but he really was kicking a lot of recruiting ass for the team and putting in serious work. He personally brought in like 3-4 blue chippers and has shown leadership before even stepping on the field. I'm sure Bronco's not mad at him.

I think it is a bit of both. I think Bronco doesn't like entitlement and wants every athlete that plays for him to bust his ass. Heaps has yet to really grasp that fact of life. How could he as everything had come so easy for him. It reminds me of a kid I knew who was a highly recruited JC qb. Bill Snyder, the HC at KSU then and now again, was recruiting him hard. He told him how KSU wanted to accomodate his strengths in the passing game. The kid believed him. He went to KSU and they changed nothing and he sat behind Ell Roberson for two years. Somethings are only taught through experience. Jake is going to struggle a bit over the next 3 months and probably lose more games than he imagined possible. What he does with that experience will be up to him. Methinks that Bronco knows this kid is uber talented but understands that hard work is good and is only likely to make him better. Hence, Mendenhall is setting the stage for the kid to understand that to be trully great he is going to have to work harder than he ever has.

If this year has taught us anything so far it is that neither of these quarterbacks are very good yet. Perhaps Heaps will get there this year, but I doubt it. I think Mendenhall is taking a long term focus and really wants Heaps to embrace Bronco's culture/emphasis on busting your ass - which I think is a culture/emphasis that every D1 coach or every competitive coach on every level seeks to facilitate. I know this falls into many of our resident stringpullers' beefs with Mendenhall and it allows them to vent publicly as the season don't look too good. But there is nothing wrong with Mendenhall wanting this kid to be as good as Mendenhall wants him to be.

Mendenhall is a head coach who wants to win football games. I am convinced that by now he has learned that it is easier to win games with more talented players than less talented players. To insist otherwise is silly. Saying that he also knows that hard work improves players and builds champions. Why don't we all evaluate Messr Mendenhall's handling of one, Jake (one syllable first name) Heaps (one syllable las name) after it is just a lil' bit more than 3 games old...or perhaps the resident pussies could get all the stringpulling out now when they got the chance.

I don't blame Bronco for being slow to warm up to Heaps. It's possible he does have entitlement issues and it be in his best interest to be broken down enough to lose them. Heaps' post game interview after FSU didn't rub me right. The team just gets a beat down and he's all smiles and talking about how excited he is and what a great opportunity it was to get more playing time. I generally am opposed to just about anything Bronco says or does off the football field, but I'm not really against him on this one.

Yea, I would have preferred Heaps came out and said. WE f'en suck. I have been here through Spring ball and Fall ball and I still suck. Now I have to start next week. No I am not excited. I thought I would come here, play behind a RM and ease into the position when I finally got enough life experiences under my belt. Crap now I gotta really prepare. When will I have time to read scriptures and decide on my mission plans.

This isn't what I bought into. Besides, I was stupid to have that press conference. I now realize I suck. Crap, I was beaten out by a guy that is primarily a runner, has been injured and now has surgery. Heck, if he hadn't needed surgery, he still might have been the starter. I suck.

I know you guys will make fun of this (well, YOhio will, so I shouldn't care) but this thread actually changed my thinking about Bronco and got me to see him as a human being who's just trying to do a very difficult job. I'm even feeling OK about Max Hall. What has gotten into me? Then again, maybe I am just in one of my more mellow moods or my medications are working better.

YO, you are not invited to respond to this post. Please remain quiet over there in the Buckeye Corner.
