I think it's ridiculous to hamstring these athletes like this. I have no problems, at all, with them receiving gifts, cash, and/or a salary for what they do.
We're talking about how many millions BYU is going to make from going independent and signing with ESPN, but the athletes see precious little of that money. The NCAA is ridiculous. I can't tell you the hassles of getting approval for a trip to Costa Rica based on the soccer industry if any soccer players come along."Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. I think it's the right decision, but I'd rather see the NCAA come down hard on Pete Carroll, as he is the biggest culprit in this entire ordeal and got away Scot free."Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." - Winston Churchill

That is a weak and naive argument. Most athletic programs (including BYU) are funded primarily by the football program and even then, many of them end up losing money. Making college football a professional league would simply decimate all but the major programs.Originally posted by wuapinmon View PostI think it's ridiculous to hamstring these athletes like this. I agree. I'm not sure what taking his trophy away does or proves...but Pete's sitting up in Seattle with a huge contract while his former school sits on probation with a douche of a coach and facing the potential that the sanctions will set the program back several years.Originally posted by il Padrino Ute View PostI think it's the right decision, but I'd rather see the NCAA come down hard on Pete Carroll, as he is the biggest culprit in this entire ordeal and got away Scot free."They're good. Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

They are student athletes, not professional.Originally posted by wuapinmon View PostI think it's ridiculous to hamstring these athletes like this. I have no problems, at all, with them receiving gifts, cash, and/or a salary for what they do.

Excellent point. The expansion of women's programs at the level they are able to compete is due to the football cash cow. And it's not as if these kids come away empty handed. At most they get training and opportunity to ply their craft at the highest level and a chance at the NFL. And at least, a college degree if they only apply themselves while in school.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostThat is a weak and naive argument. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Not to mention the traveling, gear, attire, and most importantly, all the college strange they can handle.I'm your huckleberry.

Followed by your weak and naive argument; if schools could pay athletes, the whole system would survive save those programs who can't hack it, (and ticket prices would match NFL levels to keep funding the other sports).Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostThat is a weak and naive argument. I've actually taught these student athletes; they are exhausted, beat to hell, and usually married with kids (at least the ones I taught at BYU). I think perks should be theirs."Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.

My friend that played at Oregon State, said that they were told the cost is about $65,000 per year to support a member of the football team.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostThat is a weak and naive argument. Are you serious? I have talked to several student athletes. One of which is one of my closest friends, he was given $1200 per month to do whatever he wanted with, he was given all of his meals for free, they paid his rent (up to $600 per month), he was allowed to go in and get new gear every 2 weeks, shirts, shoes, shorts, track suits etc. Not to mention he was given a new laptop each year, his schooling and books were paid for. Then if they make a bowl game they receive another $1500+ in cash and gifts. He has a PS3, Flat screen TV, and surround sound system from playing in 3 bowl games.Originally posted by wuapinmon View PostFollowed by your weak and naive argument; if schools could pay athletes, the whole system would survive save those programs who can't hack it, (and ticket prices would match NFL levels to keep funding the other sports).

He was also married during this time, his wife worked at the airport making $10 an hour. They were wealthy than any of their college friends.*Banned*

Which would be most of the universities. Including Tulane for sure.Originally posted by wuapinmon View PostFollowed by your weak and naive argument; if schools could pay athletes, the whole system would survive save those programs who can't hack it,
I know for a fact that just a few years ago, the BYU athletic program was struggling financially. Everyone relies on the football income. In some years, even the basketball team runs a deficit. For most schools, there isn't anywhere near as much extra money floating around as you think there is.

You don't think universities already charge what the market will bear for tickets?
"Mr. AD, we could raise our tickets another $50 per seat and still sell out our stadium, but since we don't pay our athletes, we don't really need any more money."
I can't believe you want to see professional student athletes.Originally posted by wuapinmon View PostI've actually taught these student athletes; they are exhausted, beat to hell, and usually married with kids (at least the ones I taught at BYU). I think perks should be theirs.
What about high school students in successful programs? Should we start cutting them a check?"There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."
