  • BYU's run defense

BYU allowed over 300 yrds on the ground hosting FSU last season. Clearly FSU has a mobile QB, but their back is really a pedestrian back, but he went nuts in Provo. It's odd because BYU had a top 20 run D last season, despite getting completely run by FSU.

To me, this UW team is similar to FSU in many ways. I know JL gets all kinds of hype, but as someone who has actually watched most of his games, I don't get it. He's not a very accurate down field passer; he's a great athlete. I think the key to Saturday's game for BYU is stopping Polk and JL's scrambling, not JL's arm.

How will BYU fair against UW's run game?

I think they will fair better than they did against FSU last year. But I still think UW wins.

I think BYU is more athletic than it was last year. I actually think that there will be an upgrade at the NT position immediately noticeable and I am actually confident that the ILB play will be as good as last year from the first game- it will improve to better than last year by the end of the year. I also think that the more experienced defensive backfield will allow BYU to play the rush game more aggressively early in the year. My guess is that BYU will force Jake Locker to beat BYU through the air. Saying that, I think between Locker's scrambling on broken plays and him completing enough passes he will do enough to lead his club to victory in week one.

Luckily BYU will not have to play against the best RB in the nation on opening night.

That's hard to say. As far as I can tell, he was only anointed such after the game by the winning side. So we should wait and see.

I thought Jesus moved on to play for the Broncos.

I don't know, but last year I give a lot of credit to a FSU's undersized line. We were by far the smallest D-line they had to deal with all year, and they got after us and put the line and LBs on their heels. Don't know if it was just good coaching on FSU's part or if we were underprepared after a big W against OU, but I hope we don't have a repeat in a few weeks.

I always worry more about mobile QB's than traditional RB's. Locker is a great athlete and can definitely do some damage with his legs..
