Cain was hurt by Asiata's injury as well. Without the inside power running game, the safeties were able to shade more to the slant/hook zone, which made the passing windows on the short passes that much more difficult to complete. I still contend that if Asaita stayed healthy, Cain would have finished the year and Wynn would have redshirt.

Saturday scrimmage numbers:

Cain 14-18 227 yards 2 TDs

I was there. The guy with the rubber glove was surprisingly gentle.

Cain is exactly who he was. I personally didn't see him check down a single time. He knows where the ball is going, and he throws it well to the primary guy. It's on the money where he throws it, he just doesn't throw it downfield or to anyone other than the primary guy. He was also throwing against the twos or worse. He looks great, and I'm more than comfortable with him if the need arises, but it's like getting into a relationship with Jennifer Aniston - you're gonna get what you're gonna get and for some reason she can't keep a man. Or something.

Wynn looked dreadful. The numbers don't do it justice. I think he's like Brett Mahana Elliott, not much of a practice guy, but a real gamer. I sure hope so. However, he looked better than Cain in the run game. The thing about Cain in the run game is that he has the tools to do it, but he doesn't do it well. Wynn was lights out in the read option stuff. Maybe it will be different when he's getting hit, but he was filthy.

At this point, Utah is great in the ground game, and in stopping the ground game. The defensive line plays with a real social irresponsibility, and they like to hurt people. They are nnnaaassstttyyyyy. Brandon Burton is delicious and pissed off, and I'll be shocked if he's in Utah's fall camp next year. Tap Tap is the key to the DBs, and Blechen, while being a step out of position a lot of the time, doesn't look out of place at all. The linebackers are your average Stanley Roper Utah linebackers.

Really, Utah's run game should be good enough that the passing game just needs to compliment it. The deep ball threat is key to giving space in the run game, and Cain just simply won't throw the deep ball. Utah will win this year running the ball, and stopping the run. I don't expect them to be explosive, but they'll be tough as hell to beat.

Last year, the offense was better with Wynn. They scored more points against better competition. Regardless of how he looks in practice, I expect that to be the case this year. I just hope Wynn survives the Pitt defensive ends, so we can see what he can do throughout a season.

If that's true than that really erases Wynn's only bugaboo from last year, his unwillingness to keep the ball on the read option. That should make every Ute fan very pleased for this year, despite a rough scrimmage.
