Video of the UM man in question on the sideline from last year’s OSU game. He is clearly looking to the sideline to read the signs and he and the whole sideline proceed to gesture for pass.

Going to be an interesting game this year for sure.

So apparently OSU scored on this play? Not really helping them make the point though I agree in general that they've been doing it and that it's cheating.

This is gathering more legs.. News article from the Washington Post outlining how the investigation began as well as who was targeted.

“The opponents targeted the most on this schedule, these people said, were not surprising. Atop the list was Ohio State, Michigan’s top rival in the Big Ten, and scouts planned to attend as many as eight games, costing more than $3,000 in travel and tickets. Next on the list was Georgia, a potential opponent in the College Football Playoff, with four or five games scheduled for in-person scouting and video-recording, also costing more than $3,000 in travel and tickets.”

Listening to College Football Enquirer (I highly recommend it), they said that "in person scouting" is a violation of the rules, and that is the problem. Sure, you can "steal" signs, but it must happen at and during the game, not at other games. That's why there is so much focus on the trips taken by good ole Connor.

I didn't think it was illegal to decipher signs while watching film, because there is no way to stop it. I always thought a fair amount of teams were doing this. Over the years I have heard complaints on twitter and various fan bases in the Pac-12 that Utah does this in addition to simulating the snap count. But I always thought it was legal to do since other coaches don't seem to complain about it.

Ok thanks, that is good context. If that is the case Michigan should be punished. And if that is the case it's also amazing that coaches would wave those laminated cards with Ohio State's signs on them around freely on the sidelines. Pretty brazen.

But regardless the Dude is right. Just go to the comms in the helmets and eliminate the advantage the possibility of these kinds of shenanigans. Although 3rd and 4th string quarterbacks across the country will weep for lack of responsibility on game days.

This change will be made and we will soon look back on the signs and hand gestures and shake our heads.
