Did we know Pitta was going to be what he was? I'll agree that defensively it seemed like we knew what we were getting, but I view Fui/Tonga the same way I view the JJ/Kariya/Quezeda...adequate, but not great.

With Pitta and Collie coming off of missions BYU had known commodities that were good in the passing game. Fui and Tonga were known commodities as both rushers and blockers, obviously Fui's injury prevented him from ever returning to the player from the first half of '06 but Harvey's surprise made us forget. Also Harvey's emergence was not an overwhelming surprise as the coaches and many in the program knew Harvey was really good. I don't think I have ever read anyone praise any of our current rbs to that level so I don't expect any surprises like that. I think Quezada could develop into the same type of runner that Curtis Brown was by next year if he really works hard. I think the other backs will be adequate but nobody we can rely upon while Heaps gains some experience. I think the AF game is really as tilted in AF's favor as it could get given the disparities between the programs. If they can't beat BYU under these circumstances, Bronco is likely to run roughshod on the Flyboys like Lavell did from after they broke our Cougar Stadium cherry to Sark's first game in blue.

I think they were a little better than that in '08.

No one knew Pitta was going to blow up like that.

Yea, I thought they were 13-0, but I don't know for sure. Like I said, I don't follow them that closely.

I did and so did anyone who watched him play before he went on his mission.

I agree. I just wish they would have moved Vic So'oto's position earlier. I wonder how many good TEs the offense can really utilize. I think that Mahina, Holt and Wilson all have star power written over them, but right now Muehlman is the steady eddy. All 4 are freshman, but I think BYU will redshirt Holt. I say play Muehlman and Mahina this year as BYU is likely to play more 3 wr sets so the TE won't be the fixture it normally is. Richard Wilson needs to go on a mission and then next year faze out the steady eddy for Holt and Mahina.

In 2006 Fui ran for more yards than JJ & Kariya combined in 2009 and Tonga added another 200. Unless Quezeda really picks up the slack we could be in trouble.

I take that to mean you didn't recognize it. Why am I not surprised. Maybe you didn't have enough numbers to come up with some statistical probability chart.

It is important to look at opponents as well. In 2006 Utah went 7-5 in the regular season with losses to a decent UCLA team, a very good Boise team (who spanked Utah at Utah), and losses at Wyoming, New Mexico, and in Provo. They beat Northern Arizona and USU in their other non conference games and beat TCU at home.

I would say the Ys schedule is similar, though slightly tougher for the Y. Washington is easier at home than that Boise team, though both would have been underdogs. At FSU probably harder than at UCLA, though again, both underdogs. USU 2010 should be quite a bit better than USU 2006. Nevada is much tougher than Northern Arizona. IMO TCU 2010 likely to be better than TCU 2007.

All things considered to have a rebuilding year at 7-5 or 8-4 is not a terrible place to be. Especially with two top 25 teams in conference and potentially two top 25 non conference games as well. Could be worse.

Pitta went from 17-176 2 TDs to 59-813 5 TDs. I don't think anyone can say they saw that coming.

Pitta performed very well as a freshman. Wasn't he a freshman all American? Or was that just Collie?

I think most thought he would be good, but not as good as he was that fast.

I'll really miss Pitta this year.

To put it in perspective, Coats was 30-378 4 TDs as a freshman. Coats was 10-160 0 TDs in 2004 as a So.
