  • Recognizing Utah's RBs, WRs, and DBs

So who do you guys think was BYU's best quarterback? I know it's the en vogue thing these days to pick Jim McMahon, and there's no denying that he was a heck of a quarterback. I think that a little bit of what's going into that is a revisionist appreciation for the guy who bit his thumb at the overly strict way of life at the Y. As good as Detmer and Young were, they also have such spic and span images that you almost can't relate to them. The anti-hero in McMahon wins over a few hearts in the long run. It makes me wonder whose legacy at BYU will be more enduring: John Beck, or Max Hall.

(Here in Chicago, incidentally, the thing people know most about Jim McMahon and his days at the Y was the way that BYU conveniently overlooked any honor code infractions until he had used up his eligibility. Something to think about when considering honor code enforcement and athletes.)

I just thought it would be inappropriate to discuss BYU's quarterbacks without taking just a little time to recognize the talented young men that have gone through the ranks of the University of Utah.

I really liked David Reed's ability to get open and make a play.

Have you guys seen this rather well-written college football site? Paul Meyerberg is the author's name and he seems to have done his homework. Today's post happens to be about Utah (the writer's #17) but he is working his way down through his top 120 teams. He has BYU at #36 but the link doesn't take you to a write-up.

They don’t call it the Holy War for nothing. An alleged incident between an ill-behaved (I’m being kind) B.Y.U. student and Whittingham’s wife following the game only adds fuel to the fieriest rivalry in the country.
"The fieriest rivalry in the country." Gotta love that.

Steve Smith is back in action and as talkative as ever. Added bonus: Jordan Gross is quoted in the article.
