Very interesting and sad that he was treated so poorly. He was an excellent kicker (he had kicked 2 or 3 from longer distances that game). I read a touching interview with him 25 years or so after that game and was very impressed. I felt so bad for him at the time. Glad he’s recovered and still giving his all to BYU.

I'm here (and I was wrong) and honestly pretty happy to be wrong about the D-line. Jackson, Nelson, Lartsen, Mangelson... and all the other sons of Leif Erikson played a much better game than I ever anticipated. Baylor was committed to pounding the ball, but BYU didn't fold. I will say I did put some money where my loud mouth was and am proud to know I'm helping to build the next beautiful MGM casino at which y'all can enjoy a delicious crab leg buffet before we take on the Irish.

Oldroyd needs to figure out his yips because we'll need him. Really hope he isn't permanently broken.

The DL gave you no reason to expect what occurred on Saturday. It feels so good to be wrong.

When healthy last year they were not moved around. I thought they were really good through ASU last year-then the wheels came off.

I think folks need to trust Kalani. He has shown that he is willing to send assistants not helping BYU win packing. If he believes in Tuiaki my guess is there is a good reason and probably a lot more as to why the defense is struggling than just the DC.

I still think BYU ought to be sending an interior DL to the NFL at least 1/3 years. It was that way until about the last 20. With what Kalani has going on and the heavy Poly coaching influence BYU should start getting some of the real high end LDS talent on occasion. They are picking up more of the next tier studs (Logan Fano, Siale Esere and Ben Moa's kid) the past two years than it seems they did for the past decade, but I think we ought to start seeing more of Kingsley Sumataia's (the Akana type of kid) type of recruiting attention heading BYU's way.

My impression of last year was that "didn't suck" was the high water mark. They did not look particularly good against USF either.

But I agree that the DL woes are likely personnel/development. Looks like they've addressed the latter, and hopefully recruiting will fix the former.

              • Just catching up on the thread. RGIII was a fantastic announcer and did a great job disguising his bias. Cheesy one-liners and all. The worst is when you can audibly hear disappointment from the commentators when BYU does something good(can't remember who that was a couple years ago, but it was bad. Maybe someone here remembers.)

As for the game, I was pleased about how we played on offense. Baylor obviously was keying on the run and was familiar with our personnel challenges. Roberts rose to the challenge and it will be good to add him as a solid feature going forward. No more surprises- just a little more depth. Oldroyd got spooked by the lack of icing on that FG is my personal feeling, but who knows. I thought it was game over when we failed that conversion, but the student section came through with that clutch false start that severely limited Baylor's options for their last down. I am very surprised we won-- looking over our schedule I had all but penciled this as a loss. Especially after last year. On to the next!

Was he better than Rod Gilmore?

                  • Very fun win, and I'm so glad they pulled it out. If I'm focusing on what needs improvement, our RBs are really, really sub-par. I realize Brooks has the P12 pedigree and amazing RB physique and all, but when you are getting double-digit carries and making Lopini Katoa look nimble and elusive, that's a big concern. I kind of wish we had seen some Jackson McChesney at some point, as he seems to offer at least a little change of pace. Also, its now clear why we went to Puka on the end around so much in game 1--that's our change of pace in the run game.

EDIT: Oh, also, I'm a little bummed that the missed FGs and 2OT ending basically stole the highlights, so the double-pass TD to Jaren never really made the highlight reel on SportsCenter, etc. That was such fun gadget play to bust out and executed so well.

If you take away Brooks' 50 yard run he's been pretty ordinary. He doesn't seem very quick to the hole, and he doesn't seem to move the pile once he gets there. Hopefully we figure out a way to get more production from the ground game.

Brooks did break off some big runs against South Florida, showcasing his speed (with huge holes produced by the O-line). I wasn't particularly impressed with his rushing attempts against Baylor. He had 13 attempts for 31 yards (2.4 average) with a long of 6 yards. He also caught 3 passes for 13 yards.

By way of comparison, last year against Baylor, Tyler Allgeier had 15 rushing attempts for 33 yards (2.2 average) with a long of 7 yards and caught 3 passes for 8 yards.

So maybe it's a little early to judge.

I was texting with someone during the game about this very fact (but he was too busy having to listent to his FIL talk about how Utah "basically won" both in the Rose Bowl and Swamp). I'm guessing Brooks is a little better than Katoa, just based upon the fact coaches give him more carries. But he is nothing like Allegier (even though their stats vs Baylor were equally putrid). Brooks has no shift or lateral movement in the hole. Tyler ran a lot like LeVeon Bell he was excellent at setting up blocks with small side jumps, and a quick change of pace. Brooks may still prove to be a valuable asset but BYU fans were very spoiled to have found a diamond in the rough like Tyler was.
