I am with YO. This seems like a really stupid decision. This could be the beginning of the end for BYU athletics.

I don't mean anything personal here, YO, but I've always seen you as simultaneously desperate and snobby.Originally posted by YOhio View PostGoing independent still seems like a really bad move to me. For the life of me, I don't understand how that increases our chances enough to justify the risk. I am with you. From my perspective I don't get it. Either the decision makers have no clue of BYU's real place in the world or they know a whole lot more than I do- which they likely do. It isn't BYU's style, IMO, to do anything in any manner other than cautious. I hope they really have a plan, and more importantly I hope others' plans genuinely coincide with BYU's.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostFor the life of me, I don't understand how that increases our chances enough to justify the risk. Hopefully all this independent talk will force the MWC to give BYU what it wants (independent broadcast rights for its sports like Texas has in the big 12) to keep them in the conference.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostI am with YO. That's in part because I'm assuming that if they make the move that it's not a half-assed decision and that they have things in place. I am expecting that IF BYU actually does announce independence that it's going to be with a (a) a robust media package in place and (b) a deal with ESPN that guarantees X number of games per year that ESPN will help schedule.
If BYU can get a 4-game annual deal from ESPN, with ESPN's backing in scheduling then they can fill the other 8 spots on their own.

BTW, JL I think the key phrase you use here is "I don't understand" - I think that's probably true, and that if all of the information was available we would all be saying "oh, I get it, that makes sense."Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostFor the life of me, I don't understand how that increases our chances enough to justify the risk. What risk?Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostFor the life of me, I don't understand how that increases our chances enough to justify the risk. And the risk is enormous.
The MWC is going NOWHERE. EVER. BYU earns the lion's share of the revenues for the conference, but only gets an equal share to the rest of the loser schools. BYU expects between 3 - 5 times the MWC TV revenue - and that's if things don't work out (Just think about this point - BYU got as much $$$ for the Oklahoma game last year as they got for their entire share of the MWC TV money.
Go Indy. Produce the games themselves (in HD) and use a local station to put the games on local TV. Also distribute the games through national PPV. The local contract is worth about double what they'll get this year from the MWC. PPV would be worth something, not sure how much, but something. The kicker would be ESPN. Work out a series or 3 or 4 games per year with ESPN, where ESPN recruits the opponent and puts the game on prime-time in HD - like the Oklahoma game was last year. If they could get to that point, and ifBYU"s PPV draw is as good as many have claimed, BYU would be looking at many times more the TV revenue that they get from the MWC.
Finally, if they have a good season, and go to a decent/good bowl, you don't split the $$$ with a conference. That's another big potential upside.
So where's the risk?
Minus Utah the MWC WILL NOT get a BCS auto-bid. The rest of the league (minus TCU & BSU) offer N O T H I N G. Leaving only has upside. There is no risk.

Maybe ESPN would try to get Boise State to stay in the WAC if BYU goes the Independent/WAC route. There is no penalty if Boise backs out now. The MWC has taken a huge hit with no Utah and no BYU, and I think Boise State fans would prefer to stick with ESPN now rather than move over to the MTN/Versus/CSTV plan.
