roderick has said he's coached him to ensure they don't overthrow open receivers - to err on the side of the underthrow and give byu's big, skilled receivers a chance to make plays. and frankly it's very hard to argue with the results.

i was watching an OU game earlier this year and lincoln riley pretty much echoed that philosophy when he said the worst thing a QB can do on a deep ball is overthrow a wide open receiver.

Hmm, interesting. I didn't know they' were coaching that way. I just see the throw and the receiver coming back to it and making the catch (usually) and think, " that would have been six points if they had given it more distance" I guess that's why I'm a fan and not a coach

Yeah, Roderick specifically mentioned that. "I know a lot of fans are complaining, but..."

Exactly. You're basically saying your margin of error is greater by making the receiver win the matchup versus making the quarterback be absolutely perfect with ball placement. As SMR said, the results speak for themselves.

You must have loved Tanner Magnum's 7 yards too long arm. The release and ball flight were beautfiul. The falling to the ground without being touched, not so much.

Also, Tanner (and Taysom if we are honest) threw a ton of balls out of bounds. Drove me nuts how many times he did that on 3rd or 4th down.

Also, erring on the side of underthrown is not the same as preferring an underthrown ball. Not everyone drops 40-yard dimes like Zach Wilson did, though, so better to have a chance to make a play if the ball isn't right on target.

On the other hand, it probably increases the chance of an interception as well, but our receivers have been really good at fighting for position and the ball.

True-- yet at the same time, Hall has thrown only three interceptions. ZW likewise had three interceptions in 2020. I think Roderick has been very effective coaching his quarterbacks to watch for how the cornerbacks are positioned so those deep passes are not effectively contested. CBers may call them 50/50 balls, but the odds seem to be much more favorable than that.

That’s a pretty valid point, and ultimately the offense is doing ok.

You also have to keep in mind that a 40 yard interception isn't much different than a 40 yard punt. When you take into account down and distance, the risk of a long interception isn't that significant.
