  • Return of the Living Dork - BYU vs Virginia 2021

We have a halloween special on Saturday night. Here are a few reasons to cheer against Bronco:

    1) He gave us some good years and elevated the program from the Gary Crowton disaster, but the way he left will never sit well with me. Clearly he never felt much loyalty to the program or university and viewed it as just another job. Cleaned out the entire staff and skipped town.

    2) He now recruits against us. Somehow he convinces gullible local kids to go all the way across the country to play for him and he plays up the LDS staff angle. Jerk.

    3) He had a horrendous record against our rival. Somehow found a way to come out flat every year and lose close games to utah. Will never forgive him for that.

    4) Every now and then he would pull off an upset (Nebraska for example), but he rarely seemed to get the team ready for big games. His bowl record was awful.

    5) "Football is fifth". Well, obviously. See prior two items.

    6) Shortly after leaving, he said that BYU didn't have much of a future and that we would never make it into a P5 league. Choke on it, Bronco.

    7) His clock management was so bad it was laughable. Remember when he burned a bunch of timeouts to ice the kicker on an extra point?

    8) He is a huge dork. The dumb names for his kids, the cheesy quotes and slogans, the "spirit - tradition - honor" jersey debacle, taking himself way too seriously, pretending to be some kind of intellectual, etc. Good riddance.

    I hope we obliterate them.

I like where this is going.

I boo'd him once, yes I was there at the BC game, and will do it again - this time from my living room. Though my parents have offered me their tickets...

Most of the above - meh

      9) The stupid 3 point stance from the sidelines before sprinting on the field.

Maybe we should thank him for that. I love what Sitake has done here.

Haha. I forgot about that. Maybe the dorkiest thing he does.

Glad we got rid of him so this is all fixed.

I agree with pretty much your whole list, and I like Bronco!. Bronco recruiting Utah kids cheeses me off. Hope we kill them and Bronco complains about being booed.

Virginia still does that. They are dumb.

Whatever happens, he needs to be booed. Not because he deserves it but because he deserves it.

I agree with most of the list, but by far the main reason I'm cheering against Bronco is because he's coaching the team we play.

There are lots of reasons to like Bronco. I'll always be grateful to him for getting us out of the Crowton era, which very well could have resulted in the death of BYU football. He brought back the stretch Y. His work with KVN, as detailed in The System, was impressive in its balance of disciplined tough love and compassion. He recruited Taysom, Jamaal, Fred, Max, and so many other BYU greats. A lot of former players him.

JL's list summarizes a lot of things that also annoy me about Bronco. But I dont hate him. I think we are better without him at this stage but I am really grateful for what he did for BYU football. Also as I stated in another thread he was the perfect BYU coach for Utah fans and the fact that all his dorkiness set so many of them off made it infinitely more tolerable.

Bronco's problem is you can't get away with being that crusty and thin-skinned unless you win at a high level. Saban is an a-hole for the most part but his fans don't give a crap because his wins almost every game he plays. As pointed out in JL's list, Bronco failed at winning at to many critical times for the fans to put up with him being shocked and appalled at booing.

Also I hope we win by 100 points and no talented LDS kids ever consider playing for Virginia again.

I always wondered if his religious persona was real or if that was a show to keep his job. Sitake seems as genuine as Mendenhall seemed fake.

BYU fans should get a 'they will not replace us' chant going for all the coaches who left to Charlottesville.

He would have a better shot at the NFL at BYU.

I really liked Bronco. I also hope we obliterate them.

Does anyone know much about this year's Virginia team? IIRC, I've seen scores from the last couple of weeks with them scoring in the 40s. I get the sense they're treading water this year, but I haven't paid much attention.
