I know that you know that they know that we know that conference expansion ain't over. We're just pausing as the Forgotten Five made a strategic move to head off the 12Pac and give the UofTeja$ its dream of a Longhorn network while remaining in a power conference. The Pac 16 is as dead as a doornail. The game has shifted.

Right now the UofTeja$ and the Big 10 are courting Notre Dame. The Big 10 and its 'tradition' vs Teja$ trying to give Notre Dame its beloved independence. If Notre Dame doesn't pull the trigger soon, the Big 12 will be inviting two more teams pronto to get its conference championship game cash cow going. And, to be honest, BYU has some big fans (OU) in the Big 12. They'll be the next big movers along w/ some trash like CSU and their possible television sets. Just being honest.

Finally, I'm not a BYU fan nor am I a Mormon. I do, though, admire Lavelle Edwards and his school's football tradition. It's like KU basketball in that you cannot stick a fork anywhere from Philadelphia to Seattle w/out BYU connections. And talk about tough characters like Jim McMahon/Ty Detmer. The Big 12 would be insane not to lust after Cougar Football. Could you imagine Jim McMahon/Brian Bosworth doing some pregame in JerryWorld on Championship Sat w/ undefeated BYU vs OU? Awesome show.

Red Legger, welcome. Your gracious posts have helped eliminate the only pain KU has ever caused me (overall, I've always had considerable respect for the school, but....).

1992 Aloha Bowl. 25th ranked BYU played the Jayhawks without Ryan Hancock, whose football career ended the previous game by a Ute hit that shall not be recounted here. Steve Young's little bro made his first start and did a reasonably good job. The game was back and forth (KU's Dana Stubblefield was a beast), but the Jayhawks won on a very late, impressive drive for the winning TD (KU 23, BYU 20). The painful part was that BYU was rolling early on, but KU got back in the game on a pass to a wideout behind the line of scrimmage on the right flat. The WR then passed to a streaking receiver way down field for a score. During live action, and on the one replay that was shown (sadly, this was before the the heavens bestowed Tivo upon us), it looked to me like the initial pass from the QB (Hillary or something?) was a forward pass. But neither the refs nor commentators caught it.

But having finally unburdened myself of that, and with you being such a nice guy and all. I'm ready to move on. Honest.

I'm talking about the vicious, ill-spirited, intentional hit by Ute nation - not just the players on the field at the time, but the entire team and the coaches, cheerleaders and every Utah fan in the stadium - that nearly killed Hancock.

I just wish I had been there to participate, but I'd at least love to have someone show me the video.

I believe I can answer this. Utah has always regarded BYU as its main rival and likely always will. A key characteristic of one caught up in a rivalry is the gnawing concern that one's rival may think well of itself, and one takes whatever steps one can to stifle such thoughts.

I would add that since the days of annual drubbings at the hands of BYU, Utah has viewed its program, its status, its very well being through the prism that is BYU. Nearly everything is viewed vis-a-vis BYU; where does an achievement rank in terms of what BYU has achieved. I don't see that ending any time soon. For example, in many Ute Fan's eyes, going to the PAC 10 is as much about BYU not being considered and left behind as it is about Utah joining that club.

I'm just sad that Red Legger's introduction to CUF has been tainted by this need to compare and contrast.
