  • Neinas confident that Mizzou will be staying in Big 12:

Interim Big 12 commissioner Chuck Neinas says he is confident Missouri will stay in the Big 12.

The Big 12 athletic directors wrapped up two days of meetings in Dallas on Wednesday and Neinas met with each individually.

Missouri is the latest Big 12 school in the spotlight, considering whether to stay in the conference or move to another league.

It has been reported that Missouri was eyeing a move to the Southeastern Conference when it looked as if Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech could be heading to the Pac-12.

The Big 12 has already lost Texas A&M to the SEC.

Last week, Oklahoma president David Boren said all nine remaining schools had agreed to grant their top-tier television rights to the conference for six years.

Missouri chancellor Brady Deaton wouldn't go that far, saying members would pursue that deal.

"We understand that relative to the grant of rights issue this matter has to be considered by the Missouri board of curators, and they will have an opportunity to review what the conference has accomplished, what we're doing and what we plan to do," Neinas told reporters on a conference call Wednesday night. "I think that once they have an opportunity to fully understand and comprehend what the conference is doing that they will agree that Missouri should continue to be a good member of the Big 12 Conference."

Neinas said there was no timetable to a decision on the grant of rights deal.

"I think it depends upon the institutional process each member is required to follow," he said. "And it would not only just apply to the University of Missouri. It would apply to other institutions as well."

He also said he did not know of any offer to Missouri from another conference.

"I have not been contacted by anyone from the Southeastern Conference," he said.

Neinas suggested that Missouri would probably miss its century-old Border War football rivalry with Kansas and the opportunity to play its conference basketball tournament regularly in Kansas City, Mo., if it decided to switch leagues.

"So I think there's a lot to look at," Neinas said. "You know what happens is a pretty girl walks down the aisle and you say, 'Boy, I'd like to take her to the prom.' But there's also one who's tried and true and you know is going to be there."

This is just their way of getting back at OU for upstaging them last week with the press conferences. I just might have to tune everything expansion out until next week. This rollercoaster ride got old a month ago
The flipside of this is that Mizzou dragging it out is about making a point with Texas.

        • Bronco's comments tonight and recently strongly imply that he and his bosses want to be in the big 12. And if they didn't have much chance right now, I don't think he'd be so outspoken. I don't think he'd discuss it at all. Don't worry about BYU rejecting an invite. Not gonna happen.

No Board of Curators members responded to interview requests made by The Star on Tuesday. But three sources closely aligned with the board or the school told The Star that the curators’ prime concern is a Big 12 exit fee of up to $40 million.

“If it were just a matter of saying let’s go say goodbye Big 12 and join the SEC,” one source told The Star, “if there was no litigation or a few dollars involved, it would be an easy choice.

“If it comes down to we’ve got to come up with 40 million bucks, or whatever the number might be, that’s a different deal.”

Nebraska was reported to have forfeited $9 million in Big 12 revenue when it left for the Big Ten before this season and Colorado roughly $7 million when it moved to what is now the Pac-12.

Those figures were below the full amount that could have been withheld according to Big 12 bylaws:

100 percent of eligible revenues for a two-year period will be withheld if a school gives less than six months’ notice of departure.

90 percent if the notice is between six months to just under a year.

80 percent if notice is received less than 18 months but to a year prior to departure.

70 percent if notice is received less than two years but prior to 18 months to departure.

50 percent if notice is given before the two-year “effective date” of departure.

Exit fees for Texas A&M, which will join the Southeastern Conference next year and announced Aug. 31 that it would withdraw from the Big 12 on June 30, have been estimated at $30 million.

The curators and state officials, according to multiple sources, would not request taxpayers to pay for the exit fees. Those same sources expressed doubt even the most well-heeled MU athletic boosters would contribute anywhere approaching $40 million.

The money might be borrowed in anticipation of greater payouts coming to Missouri as part of another conference. Published reports earlier this year indicated Big Ten members could receive $22 million each in conference revenues and SEC schools could receive $18.3 million each. Big 12 schools, according to officials, could receive $13 million to $14 million each on average.
I don't think the Big 12 will be generous like they were with Nebraska and Colorado given that their TV contract is dependent on having 10 teams in the conference. Right now the 12 teams in the SEC are getting something just over $17M for their tier 1 and 2 TV contracts. Starting in 2012 the SEC will have 13 teams requiring a share. I read that SEC was expecting a 5% bump in revenue by adding aTm but that figure is looking closer to 3% now. This may mean that each SEC team may get around $16.5M each. Note that aTm in the Big 12 was to get something around $18M or more with their uneven share of the Big 12 revenue. If the Big 12 goes to an even revenue share for tier 1 and 2 then each team would get around $15M each (assuming a 10 team conference). Having to pay $40M to get a $1.5M or even $2M bump in annual revenue doesn't seem like a smart plan.

Granted that quote still is favorable to BYU moving to a new conference, but the Upset blog was pretty misleading in cutting off the end of the quote.

I had heard that the Big 12 was looking to renegotiate their Tier 1 rights with ESPN sooner rather than later and have the end of that deal coincide with the end of the tier 2 rights so they don't end up in this situation 10 years from now. Have you heard anything on that Ted?

No but it makes sense. It is interesting that both BYU and the Big 12 have eight year contracts with ESPN. It seems it would be too easy for ESPN to roll BYU's contract into the Big 12's. Maybe ESPN was thinking ahead.

At the end of the day, no matter what aTm says, they left the conference to get out from under texas' shadow. They have no argument otherwise.

Which is what makes them so incomprehensible dumb. Why didn't they just take the money they have to spend on exit fees and roll it into their program? They have a team that is competitive, finally. Definitely fourth or fifth in the conference.

LSU and Alabama aren't any easier opponents than Texas and Oklahoma. Or hasn't Aggy been paying attention?

It will be interesting to see how the Aggies do against just Arkansas (like this weekend). I am guessing that, given the aggies' long injury list, the hogs will be giving them a nice "SEC welcome" into the conference.

                              • Chip Brown updated...

10:30 AM THURSDAY - There was some confusion Wednesday night in the Big 12 office after I reported that Missouri chancellor Brady Deaton was no longer chairing the five-member expansion committee in the Big 12.

An official in the Big 12 office said Deaton was never the chair of that committee and that it was always Kansas State's president Kirk Schultz was the chair of the expansion committee.

But it has now been confirmed to me by a source in the Big 12 office that Deaton was indeed the chair of the 5-member expansion committee and has indeed resigned that position recently and was replaced by Schultz.

Deaton is also the chair of the Big 12 Board of Directors, so undoubtedly there will be speculation about why Deaton resigned the expansion committee chair with the Tigers' board of curators still weighing a possible jump from the Big 12.
It seems obviously to me why Deaton resigned his position in the expansion. Given that Mizzou is thinking about leaving he should obviously not be on the expansion committee. His expansion candidate choices may not be in the best interests of the Big 12.
