In my anecdotal experience, plenty. Growing up our ward held a youth Spring Break trip to keep the kids from going out to Havasu, Mead, Laughlin, or down to Mexico. We'd do activities every day. We went to Calico Ghost Town one day. Bowling and a movie. Etc. We'd usually have an overnight campout too. Typically at Carpenteria on Friday-Saturday and then come home to a stake dance.

I've been in Panama City for Spring Break and I would do everything I could to convince my kids to not go down there if they were old enough.

I saw a huge amount of drunk driving, drunk kids stumbling out into traffic and riding in the back of pickup trucks, etc. It doesn't surprise me at all that some kid would fall off a balcony.

I think these kinds of things happen more often than anyone realizes. This is just getting more press because it's a Notre Dame recruit.

My school had one of these tragedies last fall. The kid was a freshman with blood-alcohol three times the legal limit:

ESPN's live sunday morning sportscenter said there were 6 parents/40 kids from the kids neighborhood on the trip. Could you imagine being one of the 6 parents returning home to face the dead kids parents??? ummm sorry you're kid can't hold his booze on a 5th story balcony.

In Utah the big spring break destination was St. George. Half the cops in the state would head down to southern Utah to keep things in order.

I knew better than to ask if I could go down there.

This kind of underage drinking isn't a problem just during spring break. It's one of the reasons I that university presidents like Gordon Gee have tried to push to lower the legal drinking age to 18. Of course, I believe that they want the age lowered for no other reason than to protect the university from being held liable when a tragedy like this occurs.

It does happen a lot. Myrtle Beach is not too far from us, so we get a lot of news from there, and it is not uncommon for a kid to fall to his or her death from a balcony over spring break. It has happened several times over the last few years, and that is just in MB.

Half of our entire high school would skip a few days of school to go to St. George for the "Sunshine Tournament" (baseball) every spring, except none of the kids actually attended the games. It was just an excuse for unsupervised debauchery.

Most of the kids up here go there for 'Beach Week' after graduation. Lots of kids go down and it is wild. In fact FN Phat and me have friends who would continue to go down well after they graduated just to hook up with drunk, horny girls fresh out of HS.
