If you ask your kids, they will say that we love the youngest, so by default, he may be right in that regard as well.

EDIT: that rule probably allows for women to have more than 1 favorite child as well

Both are acceptable. Thus, in theory, it IS possible to have more than one favorite. However, per Scott Van Pelt (and me), definition 'a' violates the spirit and unwritten rules of sports fanaticism.
You just cited your own exception to this rule, which, if accurate, allows you to have 6 "favorite" MLB teams? AL West, East, Central, NL West, East, Central.

I don't think you and Scott Van pelt are in agreement.

Ah, ok. Thanks for the clarification. The use of "favorite" muddies the water unnecessarily.

        In that case, I disagree.

I wish we had a *shakes head* emoticon. If you actually read my post, you would see that my rule allows for separate "second favorites" for separate leagues. The AL West, Central and East are all in the same league. But I suspect you already knew that. You're just upset your long-held belief that the word "favorite" meant only one proved to be false.

Is your rule one to which Scott Van Pelt subscribes? In other words, you can have a favorite NL and a favorite AL team?

I guess the Lakers and the celtics can be my favorite teams, at least according to your rule?

I'm straddling the line in my NBA fandom, I have a favorite team(the Jazz) and a favorite player(Lebron James) who I both root for, don't know if that disqualifies me from manhood.

                I guess I'm not a man.

When it comes to college football and basketball I have two favorite teams: BYU and UNC. I have strong ties to both schools and when they play each other I feel conflicted over who to root for. In the end I have to tell myself that I can't lose, because regardless of the outcome my team is going to win.

Luckily for you, most years you will be able to accurately predict which team would win a football matchup and which would win the roundball matchup.

In Pro Football, I only really follow one team - the packers. In college football I follow two - BYU and Oklahoma. I'm not sure what that makes me

I may be small, but I'm slow.

Again, the rule applies to LEAGUES, not conferences. The NBA has only ONE league.

I have no idea what Scott Van Pelt subscribes to. But I'll shoot him an email. Maybe he can settle this debate for us on air!

why does the rule only apply to leagues?

I am trying to understand your carve out.

NFL delineates by conference, as does the NBA, as does the NHL. Why the exception for baseball?

Because, other than interleague play, the AL does not compete with the NL until the world series.

In the NBA, your two favorite teams from different conferences play each other only twice until the Finals. In baseball, because of interleague play, your two favorite teams from different leagues could play each other 3-6 times. In fact, in baseball your 2 favorite teams can play each other more than in AFC/NFC matchups in the NFL or the NBA.

Baseball is not your best way to illustrate the separation factor for your two favorite teams. In fact, it may be the worst.
