  • How come nobody is talking about the Oline injuries?

Looks like there will be no spring game this year:

    http://www.sltrib.com/Sports/ci_14735578

BYU football fans' hopes that the Cougars will have a spring game this year, after last year's game was canceled due to field renovations at LaVell Edwards Stadium, are in serious jeopardy.

The hopes suffered a blow on Monday because the Cougars may have lost another offensive lineman to injury.

Freshman returned missionary Famika Anae fell over a prone player during an 11-on-11 scrimmage and might have torn an ACL, coach Bronco Mendenhall said after Monday's practice.

"Just makes me sick," Mendenhall said.

The Cougars started spring camp last week with just eight healthy offensive linemen, causing Mendenhall to say that the spring game would likely be shelved once again due to the lack of depth at that position.

"We only had six healthy guys out today because Matt Reynolds has been out with a shoulder [injury] and Terence Brown was out with a shoulder [injury]," Mendenhall said. "There were six [practicing] today, and now [Anae's injury] makes five "

Anae played at nearby Timpview High and is the son of offensive coordinator Robert Anae .

Bronco hates fans. That is why there is no spring game. It was probably Bronco swinging an oar like a Samarai sword that led to Famika's ACL tear just so he could have the justification to skip the spring game.

I think the reason most aren't talking about OL injuries is that the majority of the guys from last year's OL will return and are expected to be healthy by August. In fact I think the only starter not returning is the center. It is an issue right now because it mitigates what can be done to develop the Qbs, and of course the justification for Bronco to stick it to BYU fans, but I am of the opinion that by the time the season starts the big fatties up front for BYU will be good and pretty deep.

This is something that should be talked about right now. The depth on the o line for BYU is pathetic and the worst it has been since I can remember. BYU is one injury away from not being able to field an entire O line for team periods. We should also note that one of the 5 healthy guys is Braden Brown who started the year as a Tight End last year. Braden will be legit though. He has a ton of upside.

There are 11 scholarship players on the roster right now. I think Brad Wilcox might be going on a mission this summer. There are 4 incoming freshman and about 4 more coming off missions this summer. I think by the season BYU will have its most deep OL in many years.

lol that's the excuse this year. Bronco just hates to coach games. He'll get out of them any way he can.

That is a lot of inexperience though. The depth as it stands right now because of injuries and how it was last year isn't good at all though.

When does Brock Stringham get back? This dude I know said he is going to be really good. He said he would have started as a Redshirt Freshman had he not went on a mission.

EDIT: It is pretty bad right now Goat. I would also go as far to say that 2 of the starters or projected starters wouldn't come close to starting normal years for BYU and wouldn't ever see the field.

Inexperience at OL depth is nothing new, it is something most teams are accustomed to, the starters get almost all of the game reps. BYU has always had no problem plugging missionary and freshman OLinemen in.

The returning OL from missions are Yeck, Stringham, Walt Kailahaialahiahaila and Maanaki Vaitai. All 4 of those are reputed to have very good potential.

I look at the 10 on scholarship and BYU will return 4 starters, two of those 4 also started as freshman in Reynolds and Brown. Then they return Braden Hansen who is a future all conference player and Dan Alleto, who might lose his starting position to Braden Brown. Of the other starter it is likely to be either Braden Brown, Jason Speredon, Freeman or Marco Thorson. Speredon has been around forever and not played much due to injuries and both Freeman and Thorson has some decent experience as back ups. Right there are 9 guys who have all seen some significant playing time. Houston Reynolds is another who will be a decent reserve although he will be just a RS freshman.

I think the returning RMs are some pretty capable players and I doubt any one of them sees any time next season barring injuries. My guess is when the dust settles BYU starts Reynolds, Alleto, Hansen, Brown and Brown. The primary reserves will be Speredon, Reynolds, Thorson and Freeman. That group of backups includes a guy good enough to be a starter until injuries came along in Speredon, a coach's son in Houston, a part time starter from last year in Thorson and a talented kid who has seen some time in two different years as a reserve in Freeman.

I think this OL will be pretty deep and barring catastrophic injuries will do pretty well.

Is that who is projected to start next year or who is playing right now? I understand that the OL is presently decimated by injuries, but I thought it was expected all would be healthy by August. The OL last year was pretty good and they return just about everyone. I can't see it sucking come August.

Is Dan Alleto back from his mission? Or are you talking about Nick Alleto?

That is a lot of freshman who aren't in spring ball and probably won't be in playing shape come the fall. They may be but who knows. The back ups are also guys you can't 100% count on. Especially guys like Speardon who has yet to make it through a season with out injuries as a back up. Thorson is a walk on and Little Reynolds is coming off a major injury. I don't know enough about Freeman to offer up an opinion on him.

I think Braden Brown ends up starting at Right Tackle.

I am not big on Terrance Brown and Nick Alleto. I will just leave it at that.

I am not saying there isn't talent there. There is, especially in current players like Matt Reynolds, Braden Brown and Braden Hansen. Some of the guys on missions have some serious talent as well. Brock Stringham like I said previously is spoken very highly of by this dude I know that understands a thing or 2 about football. There is also a good group on missions as well. But they aren't back yet and that is why I am saying the depth is pretty pathetic as the team is today. They will have a lot more bodies in the fall because of RM's however the question will be for them is if they are ready to step up if someone goes down.

They are projected to start. I have a different opinion than you do about the OL and there performance last year. I will share some thoughts with you later via PM.
