    BYU Linebackers 2010

Is it too early to start speculating on the greatness of this unit coming into the 2010 campaign? I don't care if it is dammit, I'm excited about this group. Pendleton, Stout, Van Noy, Ogletree, Atkinson, Leung-Wai...the list goes on. Spring ball can't get here fast enough! I look for a lot of improvement in our front seven as a whole.

3 of the guys you named are Freshman. I hope they don't get stuck behind less talented walk on who have been here a couple of years.

I expect them to run to the wrong spots faster than any other set of LBs in BYU history.

Ha! I sort of agree, although I am also really excited about this group and think that by November or so we should have a pretty solid defense.

Out of that group: Pendleton's a stud. I'm expecting Van Noy to be above average compared to a frosh, but below average compared to a historical starting LB at BYU. I'm expecting Stout to be a great player in about four years after a mission and a couple years in the system. I'm not big on the others. LB is a weak spot for us next year.

You're telling me that Van Noy won't play as well as Doman did in '09? Doman made tackles by accident. He thought gap control was a limit on how much he could spend at an overpriced store for gay men. I really think that a guy like Stout, having played in a system and on a big stage will have prepared him better than most incoming freshman, and Van Noy has had a year of preparation to get physically more imposing. I'm high on this group and high on life. (Embrace days like these as BITF is often so very cynical in his prognoses.)

I expect Van Noy to be good. I don't know how good as a freshman. And as a group, I don't expect them to be a bright spot and probably no better than they were last year. We'll likely have two guys starting that played behind the guys you're bashing from last year. If they're that good or the guys last year were that bad, then they would have been starting last year.

So if I think Stout and Van Noy will be starting this fall how is that relevant to last year since neither were "playing behind" them?

We have to replace three starters, and I think it's more likely Nelson, Ogletree, and Atkinson make up two of those three over Stout, with Van Noy as the third. But I hope you're right, and I hope they work out.

Doman and Van Noy play different positions by they way.

BYU fans should be excited about Van Noy though. He will make some freshman mistakes this year but he is a very talented kid and has a bright future ahead of him.
