I think that number is up to at least 26 now. Carlos Dunlap being one of them. Carlos only served a one game suspension (Urban shouldn't have allowed him to play in the BCS game) for his DUI and they just had a Redshirt Freshman DT get arrested the other day.

Yep, and it will only become an issue once he stops winning games.

They are the late 80's early 90's version of the Miami Hurricanes. It isn't an issue because he is winning.

Joe Pa was getting heat a couple of years ago when Penn St. was down and had a high number of arrests. Not much is being said about what Urban is doing in Gainsville.

              Chip Kelly's statement today
We are concerned anytime a student-athlete is mentioned in a police report. We do not condone any behavior that doesn’t meet University standards or our football program’s standards, and we go to great lengths to actively educate our student-athletes regarding appropriate conduct.

“We have the utmost confidence in the local law enforcement authorities to determine the facts in all instances involving our student-athletes, and will reserve further judgment or comment until further information is available.”

Belotti's comments on the same issue. Neither Chip nor Bel are saying much, but in fairness, they are saying exactly what every other AD or HC in the country would say right now, so I don't fault them for it. They have to wait for this to play out before they can condemn the kid directly.

I have a feeling that behind closed doors, Chip is getting his arse handed to him for all the shenanigans. I am not sure Phil wants his star athletes being arraigned or entering pleas while rocking Nike Oregon gear.

Also, why do I have a feeling that Chip is going to have a closed-door, players only meeting sometime tonight or tomorrow....

Oregon AD Mike Bellotti spoke at a media tour of PK Park Wednesday morning and was immediately asked about the arrest of star running back LaMichael James on fourth-degree assault, menacing and strangulation charges.
“I think we’ll have more information this afternoon and I think that we’ll have a statement,” Bellotti said. “We’re always concerned anytime an Oregon athlete or an Oregon student is in the news for the wrong reasons. At this point in time there are a lot of things that have happened, people make mistakes and I can’t comment on any of that, but obviously we are very concerned and very committed to the education of our student athletes and the rights and wrongs of doing things, the laws of the state of Oregon, and we do a great job, I believe, between our life skills classes and the programs instituted by coaches to make sure their athletes do the right things and understand right from wrong. That’s as far as I’d probably like to go.”
He was then asked what kind of behavioral requirements student-athletes have to agree to before signing a scholarship:
“I think you’d be surprised at the actual amount of character investigation that goes on. I think every coach talks to not just the respective high school coach of the athlete, but typically counselors at the school, parents, friends, acquaintances, other coaches in the conference and you get a pretty good snapshot of a young man or a young women and their character. We are very, very concerned about that.”
“The frequency of incidents is sometimes outside anyone’s control and can sometimes paint a much different picture than the reality. We have 515 student athletes at the university. They do a great job of representing themselves everyday and obviously young people make mistakes and part of our job is the continuing process of eduction.”
He was also asked what he thought when he saw the story being reported on the ESPN ticker this morning, followed by a question about Oregon’s reputation being tarnished after the recent number of off-the-field incidents:
“Don’t jump to any conclusions. Every issue that occurs, we’ll let the legal process take place and then we’ll decide things internally. Obviously we want to be on those types of stations and front covers for the right reasons.”
“I have total trust and confidence in Chip Kelly and his staff, and every coach here at the university, that they’re doing the right things.”

He damn well better be having a closed door sometime soon. There has been more crap under Chip's leadership than 15 years of Bellotti, who was known to take on some risky projects. Eugene is not a win at all costs town.

The thing with Urban is that he justifies everything he does as giving kids a second chance, third and fourth chance. The article about him in SI talked about his wife having her Psych degree and how together they thought they could rehabilitate kids. Of course if these kids were not star athletes they would not give a rat's ass about them.

They used Marty Johnson as an example of a kid getting a 2nd chance and succeeding, except now Marty is serving 5 years in a state prison for getting another DUI. Makes you wonder if Marty would have completely lost his privilege to play football if he would still be where he is today. Or maybe Urban delayed the inevitable and helped him for a short time. They said they used to speak with Marty every week and they lost touch with him for a few months when they got a letter in the mail from him saying he was in prison.

Can you provide a link confirming that Johnson is serving 5 years in prison? I'm not great at googling, because I can't find anything about it.

It was in the SI where Derek Jeter was named man of the year. They had a long article about Urban Meyer. (I was wrong it is only 2 years)

                        Here is the quote:

Meyer's approach to troubled players, though, was still evolving. Utah tailback Marty Johnson had one drunk-driving conviction before Meyer's arrival, and the new coach at first tried supporting his sobriety by including Johnson in family activities, such as his daughter Gigi's softball games. But when Johnson was arrested for another DUI in the fall of '03, all the old-school instincts kicked in and Meyer thought, I hope he goes to prison for a long time. No one would have blinked had Meyer cut him loose.

But Shelley, trained as a psychiatric nurse with a specialty in addictions, wouldn't hear of it. She insisted that they not push Johnson away: He needed guidance, not a door slammed in his face. They visited him during the nearly one month he was in jail, and Gigi even exchanged letters with him. Urban suspended Johnson indefinitely but dangled a chance to return if he adhered to a strict program: community service, regular drug tests, a phone call to Meyer each weekend night, good grades and alcohol counseling under Shelley's supervision.

It seemed to work, too. In some ways Johnson became Meyer's greatest Utah success story, greater than the megawatt offense or the astonishing assault on the national rankings. He returned to the team clean in 2004 and ran for 802 yards and 14 touchdowns as the Utes went 12--0 and finished at No. 4. He graduated with a degree in sociology. "It was unreal," says his father, Myron Johnson. "Coach Meyer treated Marty like he would his own kid. Football wasn't the main issue. He cared about Marty for the person Marty was."

The Meyers kept tabs on Johnson long after they decamped for Florida, calling his cellphone, making sure he stayed straight. His name cropped up whenever Meyer came under criticism for keeping a troubled Gator around too long. But by the time the 28 Florida football arrests on Meyer's watch became a hot message-board topic last summer, the family had lost touch with Johnson. He was arrested last April in Roseville, Calif., for his third DUI since leaving Utah, and in August pleaded guilty to two counts of felony DUI. He is serving a two-year sentence in California state prison.

Really good article by the way, it talks about his health problems well before he took his leave and it became so widely known.

So since leaving Utah Johnson has 3 more DUIs. That is 5 total in 5 years. Dude deserves to be locked up for a long time.

                          Thanks for that.

Personally, I think Johnson should have been locked up with the key thrown away after the first DUI. I believe in zero tolerance on that issue.

It is kind of like being an SC fan, except without the Rose Bowl victories.
