No its still a good comparison. The fact that PSU and USC had a common opponent and that those games did not predict the outcome of your bowl games doesn't mean common opponent comparisons are of no worth, it just means that they have their limits and are only useful as a tool for analysis to a point. Look, USC had a great year and no one will ever take #3 from them, it is quite and accomplishment. Ditto for that single number one vote.

I like to spin it this way: BYU beat PAC 10 power UW in the closing moments of the game. UW was so devistated by the loss they could not regroup and lost the rest of their games.
