  • I think I just climaxed

From Scout.com (today's Army All-American Bowl blog - all from this afternoon's practice):

"The West offense is running the hurry-up drill against air. Heaps with a perfectly thrown out route to Ross Apo on the sideline to the seven. Apo did a great job adjusting to the ball and keeping his feet in bounds."

"Connor Wood throws up a pass that's deflected in the air, knocked around by a couple of DBs, and Ross Apo grabs it out of the air for a score."

"Jake Heaps (BYU) throws a slant to a well-defended Robert Woods (USC), who makes the grab for a first down.

"The offensive line for the West continues to look much sharper, and the West QBs are getting into a good rhythm.

"Jake Heaps (BYU) completes a rocket pass across the middle to Christian Thomas (uncommitted)"

"Connor Wood(Texas) runs left and throws right completing a pass to a diving Ross Apo (BYU)"

"Jake Heaps (BYU) hits Robert Woods (USC) on a long bomb for a score, against Tony Jefferson and Demetrius Wright, Heaps pushing it past both the defenders into Woods outstretched arms."

"Jake Heaps (BYU) just hit Ross Apo (BYU) on a drag route, Apo's soft hands bringing it in"

Jake Heaps has as much physical ability as probably any qb BYU has had. The issue is whether or not he can pick up the mental piece of being a college qb. He is going to get a good shot to be a 4 year starter. If he gets that chance and has the football iq and mental intangibles to go with his physical skill set, it will be a fun time to be a BYU fan! If he doesn't there will be an ever more disproportionate amount of pussies in a fanbase that already has a disproportionate amount of pussies.

Interesting. In my opinion, the mental part of his game is what sets him apart and is his greatest strength. Physically, he is good, but isn't going to blow anyone away.

If you're right and I'm right, this kid could be pretty good!

And the great thing about Heaps is that he was voted as having the highest football IQ at the Elite 11 camp. Indications are that he does have the mental intangibles to do well.

I think the mental game is the bigger adjustment. I am sure that his high school and camps can give others some idea of his mental abilities, but the reality is we just don't know. What he is going into is totally different than anything he has heretofore experienced. The prayers before class and the nipple hardening scripture chases shouldn't be an issue for him, but the complexities of defenses are going to be something new for him. Further, if he is the starter next year I am pretty confident he will lose more games in one year than he has lost total in his high school career. How is he going to react when he is getting earholed by TCU DL and LBs? How is he going to react if he has his worst game against AF and BYU loses to a bad team in conference? How will he react when the pussies begin whining that BYU is not going to a BCS bowl by the end of his sophmore year? From what I have read and seen of him I think he has all the physical skills that Beck had, and I think that Beck had as much physical ability as any BYU qb save maybee Steve Young and his ability to scramble, but there are a great deal of physically talented qbs who just don't have the mental ability neccesary to put it all together at the college level. If Heaps can put it together mentally, he and BYU could be pretty good when he is a sophmore and if the defense can have a really good year when he is a junior or senior BYU might finally reach its manifest destiny!

I think Hall was coming into a better situation as a first year starter at qb than Heaps is if Heaps is the starter next year, but I also think a Heaps led BYU team has a higher ceiling than what we have seen the past few years.

Damn this Heaps kid. I never get involved in recruiting, and therefore never have high expectations of new recruits.

Sorry, kid. If you aren't shooting lightning out your butt within three games this fall, I'm labeling you a failure.

I was thinking the same thing. From what I can tell of Heaps, he's not a top prospect because he's 6'4 and can throw a ball 80 yards. Compared to Hall, he's a little closer to that ideal but not drastically. His brains and experience seem to set him apart.

I was under the impression that it was specifically stated that he was the only kid at the Elite 11 camp who demonstrated the ability to make all the throws already. I thought it was said that only he and Mark Sanchez were the two able to hit all the outs, crosses and bombs. Was that someone else?
