I'm hoping for a similar, but opposite effect: I hope zoots and zoobs alike who currently can't STFU about the rival end their obsession.

    • I know this one thing...whatever conference BYU joins will be way more awesome than the conference the Utes join.

        We Utes are doomed!

I only listened for about a half hour, the two hosts seemed to think it was a silly idea. Many of the callers thought it would be a free BCS title game every year, since they would only have to win the Big 10 to get there. The hosts were starting to come around to that idea. One host right before we got to my SIL's house said "I could see Texas being undefeated every year going into bowl season, so is the trade of seeing your team play the best and be challenged worth not going 12-0 every year?"

Texas and Ohio State have played each other three times in the past five seasons. Texas has won two of them and both of them were close.

It amazes me that Ohio State can have a bad string of games against the absolute elite (back to back losses in title game and back to back losses to USC) and all of a sudden Ohio State is some weak sister. Fact is, Ohio State has placed as many really good to great players in the NFL in the past 6-7 years as just about any school. Why Oklahoma doesn't get more of Ohio State's treatment is beyond me. The Big 10 vs. the Big 12 w/o Texas is a superior conference in football. Texas probably knows this.

I just wonder what kind of effect this would have on Texas's recruiting. Will being able to play in Columbus, Ann Arbor and at Penn State mean much to the recruits. Texas will likely be able to keep its games with Oklahoma and aTm, but I wonder if people in that region are so indoctrinated with the "Big 12 plays the best football" bullcrap that they would view playing a Big 10 schedule as a step down compared to what, say, aTm and Oklahoma plays.

Because the Pac 10 needs two schools, I thought much of this problem would be negated with both Texas and aTm going to the Pac 10. Texas would still have to contend with Oklahoma for recruits, but over time I think the perception would become that the Big 12 has been emasculated by the departure of both bigtime Texas schools.

But the Big 10 can offer more than the Pac 10 right now. It's revenue, bowl deals and TV deals are significantly better. I would argue on behalf of the Pac 10 that a California-Texas alliance would eventually lead to better competitive and revenue results than a Texas at Austin-Big 10 alliance. The problem I see with a Texas and aTm addition to the Pac 10 is how you'd break up the divisions. The Big 12 North-Big 12 South division has been disastrous for the Big 12 North. The ACC tried a different tactic, but that didn't work out either. I just can't see how you could have the two LA schools and the two Texas schools in the same division without totally hosing the Bay Area and Pacific Northwest schools. I think you'd have to split the partner schools up in football while simultaneously guaranteeing that the traditional rivals could play each other every year. The Nebraska-Oklahoma rivalry came to a sad end once the Big 12 was formed and these teams didn't play each other every year.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

There is no buzz about BYU going anywhere, except on BYU boards. I think BYU is staying where it is.

Good. I'd trade Utah for Boise State in a second. Wouldn't think two seconds about it.

I heard them talking about it on ESPN Radio yesterday.

SU doesn't listen to ESPN Radio! I'm sure in his circles it has yet to garner any attention.

I know! You'd think this would be enough to get SU to listen to Mike and Mike on occasion.

They were even talking about it on WING-AM 1410 during the Dayton Sports Scene. Mark Neal is a very BYU friendly radio host and said that he thinks they're a stronger addition than Utah. I tried to get through to give my thoughts on the whole matter but the lines were busy.
