Herbstreit: Jake Locker returning to school

QB Jake Locker is reportedly returning to school, according to ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit (via Joe Schad's Twitter.) Locker was projected by Scouts, Inc.'s Todd McShay today as the No. 1 pick in the draft if he declared.

It's no question that he will be the favorite to be the No. 1 pick in 2011, but he may also be the Heisman favorite in 2010. ESPN The Magazine's Bruce Feldman named his favorites last week, which included Houston QB Case Keenum, Alabama's Mark Ingram, Florida State QB Christian Ponder, Pittsburgh RB Dion Lewis, Oregon State RB Jacquizz Rodgers, Georgia Tech's duo of RB Jonathan Dwyer (if he returns) and QB Josh Nesbitt, Miami QB Jacory Harris and Oregon's duo of QB Jeremiah Masoli and RB LaMichael James.

But Locker might trump all of them. He has weapons returning, including his top five receiving targets from this season -- Jermaine Kearse (866 receiving yards), Devin Aguilar (593), James Johnson (422), TE Kavario Middleton (257) and D'Andre Goodwin (227).

If he's the favorite to be the #1 pick next year, it once again shows that the NFL has still not learned to balance their evaluation of raw athletic talent against someone who actually knows how to play the game.

I don't think Locker would have ever been the number 1 pick this year. I think anyone that projected him there is up in the night. He still has so much to learn and I think he realizes another year with Sark will benefit his football career. He is very talented but still, he has a lot to work on. I would say this is a great choice by him but we will see how that plays out. After what happened to Sam Bradford and Jermaine Gresham I was in the thinking that if the money is there take it because you never know what is going to happen. Locker would have went high, I just don't think the #1 overall pick high.

Anyone who wouldn't pick Suh with the #1 pick this year should have their head examined.

Argue with CMBF, he and Mel Kiper think so.

Why the eff would anybody care about drafting Jake Locker?

Over the past 3 seasons, Jake Locker has lead his team to 9 wins. Total.

Jake Locker is freaking insane to prolong his horrible college career. If there is someone out there that wants to actually pay him money to lead a professional NFL, he should jump at it and never let go.

Does Kiper as well? I thought it was just McShay. Locker hasn't proven he can win yet. Any NFL team that would take a shot that high on Locker would be stupid. I guess that is why they are drafting at the top though because their organization is poorly ran. I am not saying Locker isn't going to be good. He has the physical ability to do so. I just wouldn't take him that high based on what he has done on the field.

Why in the world would he go back? Makes no sense.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I am thrilled Locker is coming back. He will make it worth spending $900 on tickets next year.

Just kidding. I would spend that much even if the cougars scheduled 6 home games against Payson High. I love my Cougars.

Mel Kiper is an idiot if he thinks Locker should go #1.

I about fell out of my chair when I saw this thread.. I never would of thought this type of print would of taken place for a team that went 5-7...

                            What has Locker done really??

I agree that it makes no sense. Locker is going to get paid and if college football players that have a chance to leave early and get a boat load of money, then they should go pro and make it rain. See Sam Bradford and Jermaine Gresham as examples of this.

I just don't think Locker is worthy to be the #1 overall pick. He has some incredible talent. He also has a ton to learn and still hasn't proven as much as other quarterbacks out there. Sark is a great coach and he will learn a ton from him next year. I agree with you though, he has a chance to get paid so take the money. From what I understand in 2011, I don't think Rookies will make the money they make now. They are going to a format that is similar to the NBA so this move could cost him a ton of money.
