  • Unga considering NFL, Bronco acknowledges

    http://blogs.sltrib.com/byu/index.ph...&c=1&tb=1&pb=1
BYU is losing the winningest quarterback in school history (Max Hall) and the most prolific pass-catching tight end in NCAA history (Dennis Pitta) to graduation after the Las Vegas Bowl two weeks from today.
Will the Cougars also lose the leading rusher in school history?
Just as Austin Collie did last year, junior running back Harvey Unga is seriously considering putting his name in June’s NFL draft. How serious is Unga about leaving a year early?
I asked BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall in the MWC coaches bowl teleconference this morning if he has talked to Unga about the decision.
    Here’s Mendenhall’s response:
“The way we have handled that is coach [Robert] Anae visited with Harvey right after our game against Utah. We have given Harvey a number of people to talk to -- that he trusts, that we trust -- we think to give him the right advice.
So Harvey will take the time he needs. We have all the paperwork that needs to be submitted -- that doesn’t commit him to the draft, but allows it to be predicted as to where he will possibly fall in the draft, and where he might be selected.
So that is in the process as well.
But there isn’t any decision that has been made to this point, and probably won’t be until maybe after the holiday season.”

Unga was great during his time in Provo, and he will enjoy a long and sucessful career in the NFL.

Unga has been one of my favorite Cougars in a long time, sadly I see no reason for him to return. I also felt this way last year however. I don't think he will be taken any higher in the draft this year than he would have been last year, and I don't think he would be taken any higher in 2011.

Harvey, don't let the selfish bastards deter you. It's easy for coaches earning seven figures and lawyers earning several time six figures (or retired to a cushy life of Internet tom-foolery) to tell you to stay at BYU. You need to consider your family first. Go to the NFL young man!

When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

In Unga's case, leaving BYU may not necessarily mean going to the NFL. In the case of Collie, yes, they were one and the same.
