I thought this was another thread about Notre Dame.
The Lord's University

Haven't heard much in response to this question . . . .Originally posted by LA Ute View PostI really can't decide whether or not the makers are serious. I tend to think they are. And there is logic to the idea, after all. Hugh Nibley used to say that being the Lord's University ought to be an aspiration, not an established fact that we brag about. Do you agree with him?

These threads have lives of their own. Some thrive, others die quickly.Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

The logic is sound. I love how it gets ALUF's panties in a wad too.
I don't think God gives a rat's backside about the outcome of football games ... but believing Mormon HAVE to believe that the Lord owns BYU. Thus it is "his" University, just like my car is "FM's car", etc."It's true that everything happens for a reason. Just remember that sometimes that reason is that you did something really, really, stupid."

Do you refer to the Deseret News as the Lord's Newspaper? How about KSL-TV as the Lord's TV station?
It kind of bugs me that the Lord's Radio Station runs the Sean Hannity show every weekday.
Did you know that the Lord's Hotel used to serve alcohol? Weird, eh?
Even more weird is that the Lord's Hotel used to not allow blacks to stay there. Hmmm....."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

I don't refer to them that way, no. But it is a technically accurate description.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostOh brother.

A couple of questions:
1) Is this a common belief among church members or supporters of BYU?
2) As Ute Fans, does this bother you, or is it just one of those things that doesn't bother you but is something about which you feel compelled talk?
I'll answer #1 according to my experience. No. Undoubtedly someone out there draws a tight line between Lord's Church = Lord's University, but I honestly cannot recall anyone ever seriously making the argument. Lots of people may draw a tight line between The Church and BYU, which is probably a much easier case to make. But that shouldn't be mistaken for the former.Last edited by myboynoah; 12-07-2009, 12:58 AM.Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

And here's your answer to #2. Apparently this doesn't bother Ute fans at all, just like Max Hall's comments.Originally posted by myboynoah View PostA couple of questions:

You know now that I think about, for endowed members anyway, it's all His anway. So it's really NOT "FM's car". It's the Lord's Car. I think we should all start referring to our things that way. The Lord's Car, the Lord's sandwich, the Lord's TV, etc."It's true that everything happens for a reason. Just remember that sometimes that reason is that you did something really, really, stupid."

Oh I think it is the Lord's University Jeff just as missionary cars are the Lord's cars. In fact, BYU is the missionary car of Universities.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostOh brother.

All I am saying is this: When I was a BYU student (I enjoyed my time there very much) it made me nervous to hear the phrase "The Lord's University" bandied about. I heard Nibley say at the time that being such a place (the Lord's university) should be a goal, just like being a Zion society should be everyone's goal. Other BYU administrators of the time made the same comment. That always made sense to me. So yes, it does rankle when people toss that term out in a jingoistic way. It's not a rivalry thing, although the term is more nettlesome when used in that context. That's why I still wonder if that YouTube video is serious, or just a bit of "video trolling." I don't think the great majority of BYU fans see their athletic program that way.Originally posted by myboynoah View PostA couple of questions:

As far as whether any of the Ute fans here "feel compelled to talk" about this, we are not the ones who made the video, and a BYU fan is the one who posted it here. I.e., we didn't bring it up.Last edited by LA Ute; 12-07-2009, 07:13 AM.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

Maybe you haven't had a lesson on tithing recently. Everything we have comes from God. Therefore, God owns everything -- including the U of U.Originally posted by FMCoug View PostThe logic is sound. I love how it gets ALUF's panties in a wad too.

I was joking with the we're more righteous than you thread last week, but I don't quite understand both the frustrated ALUF and the liberal/hip BYU fan that refuses to acknowledge a God/church/BYU connection.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostOh brother.

There seems to me quite a difference between church own businesses like you mention here that are resource producing and church owned not-for-profits that are resource using and used by the church to further its causes. The latter group would include BYU, church owned media (as in the types producing church materials not the commercial operations) and PR operations, Tabernacle choir, etc.
The church pumps a $500M tithing money into BYU.
