  • Gary Patterson in favor of the bowl games, not a playoff system

    http://sports.espn.go.com/dallas/ncf...ory?id=4706555
FORT WORTH, Texas -- On a day when Gary Patterson received a contract extension through 2016, the TCU coach stated that the Horned Frogs can win a national championship despite not being in a BCS conference.

And he believes they can do so without a playoff system.

Patterson, whose contract includes salary increases for his assistants, maintains that he's in favor of the bowl games and not a playoff system.

"Is it easier to win one game for a championship? Or to have to win four?" Patterson asked. "If you have a playoff, you practice and get on a plane and play. And if you lose, it's over. If you go to a bowl game, you're there seven days and the kids can enjoy a place and get rewarded."

Patterson noted there's still a chance his 12-0 team -- TCU's first undefeated squad since 1938 -- could play for a national title this season. For that to happen, No. 4 TCU would need Nebraska to upset No. 3 Texas in the Big 12 championship Saturday at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

well that's retarded, because you have to be flawless for an entire season to make it to the Championship now-- and it's not a guaranteed appearance by any means.

Compare that to winning your last 4 or 5 games after the season when your team should be firing on all cylinders, with your championship guaranteed.

    Pandering Patterson.

I think he is just trying to make the voters happy and try to induce them into considering TCU this year. Tather than dump all over the system now, he is trying to make it happy and work for him.
      PLesa excuse the tpyos.

If the MWC becomes a BCS conference, I am fine with the current system. I don't know who outside of our conference, assuming Boise joins, has cause to complain.

I've always liked the bowl system as well but I feel it can work easily with a playoff system. Conference winners of the top 8 conferences go to the playoffs and the bowls can pick from the rest of the teams with winning records.

You don't have to eliminate the bowl games to get a playoff.

The BCS has a fan page on Facebook, Inside the BCS.

I went there to check out the fan posts, expecting to see comments like, "hey if any of you retire, a couple of retarded monkeys escaped from Hogle Zoo and need a job," but to no surprise, they do not allow fan posts. The only thing on that page is what they have to say, not vice versa.

              Shocking.

I love the irony of Coach Patterson proclaiming that he is a fan of the current bowl system and subsequently having his team narrowly miss a shot at a championship. That knucklehead should be milking this situation to lobby for a playoff.

And what kind of reward does he get for being a chump and supporting the BCS party line? A matchup with another mid-major team. Same team he played last year. Ha.

Who are the college coaches in favor of a playoff? IIRC it is a pretty short list.
