  • Jake Heaps fans, learn from Matt Barkley

There is a reason true freshman don't play much.

The QB stats at USC during the Pete Carroll era. (Note that Matt Barkley still has 2 more games...not sure if that is a good thing). Matt Barkley is having an awful year by SC standards....worst since Carson's last sucky year.

2009: Matt Barkley 12 TD and 11 INT
2008: Mark Sanchez 34 TD and 10 INT
2007: John David Booty 23 TD and 10 INT
2006: John David Booty 29 TD and 9 INT
2005: Matt Leinart 28 TD and 8 INT
2004: Matt Leinart 33 TD and 6 INT
2003: Matt Leinart 38 TD and 9 INT
2002: Carson Palmer 33 TD and 10 INT
2001: Carson Palmer 13 TD and 12 INT

Would Jake Heaps suffer a similar statistical fate if he were thrown directly into the fire next season...on the road vs Utah, TCU, and FSU?

I think it may be a LONG season next year in Provo....

This is one reason, without knowing much about either player, it seems to make more sense for Riley Nelson to start. Not only does he have more time in the program, but his ability to run will take a lot of the pressure off the passing game.

So, did Barkly start the whole season?
        Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I'd gladly trade two wins in 2010 for the experience Heaps would get as a starter. If I remember right, all the quarterbacks on Triplet's list turned out to be pretty darn good in the end.

Well, they're at SC. They were probably all 5-star guys to begin with.

They also had 5-star supporting cast members.

All but the Washington game. He was injured at the tOSU game so Aaron Corp started and played in Seattle. Technically, Barkley has amassed these stats over 10 games. He has done well for a frosh, but it is clear that he was not ready for the pressure that comes with playing at SC. The big 4 games on the calendar going into this year were @tOSU, @Kal, @Notre Dame, and @Oregon. He won 3 of the 4 of those. Not bad.

I blame at least some of the UW loss on SeattleUte's relentless sideline taunting during the game. I won't repeat what he said, but I can tell you that the comparisons SeattleUte made between the USC campus architecture and the UW campus architecture were VERY rude.

Agreed. I'm merely pointing out that there may be an alternate explanation for why USC's last four or five QBs turned out pretty good in the end, and it might not be because they started as freshman or got early experience (at least for the few that did start that early).

But those supporting cast members don't have any influence over Barkley's instincts.

He is not comparing freshmen years. You are looking at the end in those numbers. He is not saying they all played as freshmen.

5 star OL and RBs can take the pressure off of you to produce.

Okay. But they can't help you decide whether to throw into double coverage or when to step up in the pocket.

Of the QBs on the list, Carson was the one playing with regularity earlier on in his career (prior to PC). SC fans wanted him banished. Although, much like with Max Hall, Carson was racking up yardage and slowly advancing up the all-time list at SC. Carson had his breakout year in his last season, culminating with the pounding of Iowa in the Orange Bowl and the rebirth of the SC dynasty.

I see no reason why Jake Heaps can't be great for BYU, but I am wondering whether next season should be written off. It seems like a suicide mission and Heaps doesn't have the talent around him that Barkley has...although the schedule looks respectably brutal.

Is it better to hold the clipboard for a year or to get out and take snaps?
