  • All-time records

Am I the only one who isn't all that impressed with people who set all-time records for their school?

    Essentially it means

A.) You were healthy enough to play three or four years without missing many games

B.) You were pretty good to great at your position

C.) There was no one better than you at the school while you were there.

Longevity doesn't always equal greatness, but it seems to be 100% equated in some people's minds.

I think it depends. Being the all-time leading passer at Nebraska isn't that impressive. Being the all-time leading passer at BYU or Miami is. When you win 30+ games as a starting QB at any school it's pretty damn impressive to me.

You are right to take into account the players who went before.

How many three-year starters at QB has BYU seen? At running back?

You know Landry Jones set the NCAA record for most TDs ever scored by a freshman in a single game. This cracks me up. He's going to be one of those obscure trivia that Aflac asks about.

I agree with Surfah depends on the record. The all time leading rusher at Oklahoma State would be pretty damn impressive.

All time leading rusher at BYU has lost a little luster since it has been broken twice in 4 years. However 3 straight 1000 yard seasons for Harvey (less than 90 yards away from his 3rd) is pretty impressive.

If Harvey comes back for next year I imagine that he will push the record far enough out there that it won't be broken again until we have a truly special back, not just one who stays healthy for four years.

Tim Tebow breaking Garrison Hearst's SEC TD record is very misleading, considering that bowl games were not included in stats prior to 1990, and also now we have 12th games and conference championship games, which over four seasons will give Tebow 55 games to Hearst's 44.

Precisely why Detmer's passing stats are that much more impressive.

Another inflated record that has lost some luster is the 10-win season, because so many teams have 14 games now. Missouri was 10-4 last year, which is the new 8-3. Same thing with "going to a bowl." 8-3 used to be a bowl bubble; now 6-6 is practically a guarantee.

With all the good to great RBs that have played at the U, Eddie Wide's 6 straight 100 yard games is pretty impressive.

I suspect that Jordan Wynn will hold all the passing records at Utah by the time he is done baring some unforseen injury.

If you play 14 games I can understand what you are saying. But if you do not have a conference championship game and you only play 13 games, 10-3 is solid depending obviously on who your wins are against.

I am assuming Scott Mitchell is the current record holder in most categories, any idea what the numbers are?

Mostly Mitchell, Smith and Johnson. No idea what the numbers are.
