Not practiced in pads since two-a-days?

Utah’s independent news source since 1871, The Salt Lake Tribune covers news, entertainment, sports and faith for Salt Lake City and the state of Utah.

    Bronco:
“We haven’t gone full pads since two-a-days, but we have actually gone in what we call shells -- which means upper [pads] more than we did a year ago. The players like it more, they think it is helping them with their pad level, and just protecting them more. So we have actually practiced more physically [this year] than we have in the past three years, and I still think we are maintaining the edge [we want],” he said.
Could this possibly be accurate? Is this typical of other programs?

Full pads yes. They usually practice on Tuesday and Wednesday in helmets and shoulder pads.

Interesting. I never knew this. I assumed they at least went full pads a couple days of the week. This is true for all programs?

not true for all programs. Most programs the frist 8 or 9 weeks of the season will go full pads on Tuesday. That is the big "work day" in college football. It is this time of year that they start to not be so physical on Tuesday and start moving to helmets and shoulder pads.

My problem with BYU and they way they practice is that they rarely do any cross over, meaning 1's vs. 1's or 2's vs 2's. All their work during the week is vs. scout team players. Most programs that I know off do at least 4 or 5 periods on Tuesday and Wednesday of 1's vs. 1's and 2's vs 2's and not having your starters take all there reps vs. scout team players. I also think that this is Hans problem as well. The week leading up to TCU, Nick Alleto took all his reps vs. a scout team D end. That doesn't prepare you for the game.

I think he should go pads for about 3 days every 28 days or so depending on flow.

I remember this being a discussion point in the Lavell years. I don't think they ever went 1's vs 1's back then either.

This new post on CB is worth including in this thread.

Not really. I don't think I've ever read a worthwhile byu1 post, and this is not the first one.

This was the first article that came up googling the subject.

I have a hard time believing there is any rule in college athletics that doesn't get stretched to the limit.

Nobody actually practices on the field a total 20 hours a week. The 20 hours a week includes film and lifting. I would say most schools are right at that amount of hours or over it.

I'm starting to wonder if there's something to this football is 5th idea. Coleby Clawson in the middle of the season is at home more than I am.

So how many hours DO BYU players spend a week practicing, lifting and watching film?

Bronco's recently admitted they were under the limit, correct?
