  • Another question: What happened to the first down chains?

Is it just me or are the chains rarely if ever used this season?

I've seen some instances where the first down was signaled and it looked very questionable.

I watched quite a few games on Saturday and saw it. Over the course of the season, it seems very pronounced.

Is there some new, underlying policy in DI this year?

It's part of a conspiracy to keep the mid-majors out of the BCS.

That thought hadn't even crossed my mind. lol

I've noticed it in BCS vs. BCS games. nons vs. nons. Nons vs. BCS. It seems to be a change across the board.

I don't know. I've seen them used in every game.

It's not that I haven't seen them used in every game. Rather, it's that they aren't used as often. A lot of times officials are signaling first down even when it's very close.

Maybe I stated it poorly. To restate, 've seen the chains used a lot less.

I've noticed that too. They aren't used much this year.

It is because of new technology and that yellow line we see on T.V.......

A partial explanation is field turf is so uniform and well marked that it is much easier to see whether or not a first down has been obtained. I've reffed on grass fields just as well marked as field turf but because of the crown and other factors it's tougher to tell by just looking. Your eyes can play tricks on you on grass fields.
