UNLV head coach Mike Sanford was very complimentary of BYU in his postgame comments last night. He was quick to add that he thought injuries to two linebackers contributed to the setback, as did three turnovers, which he called the "difference in the game."

On the first point, in his fifth season, it's Sanford's responsibility to ensure that the backups are competent and capable, and he seemed to indicate that was not the case. Personnel and depth are coaching issues, and neither the talent nor depth appear to be what UNLV needs to turn a corner.

As for the turnovers, they were not the difference in the game. Even had UNLV scored touchdowns on its three possessions that ended in giveaways, BYU still would have won by three scores, all other things being equal.

The difference in the game was the fact UNLV can's stop anyone, and with Utah and TCU remaining on the Rebels' October agenda, things don't appear likely to improve. Clearly, Sanford is a "dead coach walking," and the school administrators can point to last night's game as a microcosm of the problems that never got solved during Sanford's remarkably unsuccessful tenure.
Wrubell writes some pretty... antagonistic things in his blogs. I've mentioned it before and been lit up. It's kinda curious. He really seems to have a chip on his shoulder about other programs and coaches in general.

Of course, people will be quick to say, "hey, it's just a blog." However, that seems to be the new medium through which media personalities express their opinions. It's kind of like an opinion column. I think it's fair to analyze blogs of media types, especially if they are hosted on mainstream news outlet websites.

I think it goes back to 2005 when Sanford left Bronco standing at midfield after the game.

Greg is really big into professionalism and showing proper decorum. Things like Whitt's onside kick or Sanford's pouting really put someone in his doghouse.

I think that he should spend his time focussing on BYU. Being a homer is fine, IMO but when one is as big a homer as he is one should not venture into the realms of being a critic of other coaches or programs. Clearly he is willing to accept the excuse of injured players having a huge impact on the game for Mendenhall without pointing out that the depth should have been better.

I like Wrubbell and his nocturnal emission when John hit Jonny earns him a place in heaven no matter what he does henceforth and forever, but just stay in the realm as a BYU cheerleader.

If I remember right they were playing without multiple starters... McKay Jacobson and half the offensive line.

He had a huge chip on his shoulder about Boylen during the first year. Ripping on him several times...his tone changed a bit last year and now it has changed even more.

That's a good example. I think the only thing that's changed that is he can't rip Boylen after Boylen was so gracious and classy towards Dave Rose.

It's the only reason I see him backing off of Boylen.

That and perhaps Boylen's behavior might have changed a wee bit as well.

Let me add that I think Boylen is a great human being and I think anyone familiar with him and his program feels similarly. I have stated my opinions concerning Wrubbell as a critic of other coaches, but Boylen acted like a buffoon his first year at Utah. JimmyB made himself a target and Wrubbell shot at it. I believe JimmyB mellowed out with his bufoonish antics quite a bit and that mixed with the fact that his true colors as a spot on human being and just all around swell guy should cause any reasonable critic to back off. I want BYU to beat Boylen but I sure want to see a guy like Boylen succeed. However, I am pretty easy. I loved Majerus and the only Ute coach I have disliked much was Urban Meyer for two reasons..1.) He was so damn good that it just wasn't right and 2.) To me Urban the mercenary is what is wrong with college football. So in essence I am jealous of Meyer's profound capabilities and what $$$ is doing to what was once the greatest amatuer competition in existence.

I don't know how much Boylen's behavior has changed. He was at the Louisville screaming into the microphone at halftime again.

Napper is talking about how Boylen is not quite as animated on the sideline as he was the first year.

I was embarrassed for him when he addressed the crowd during the Oregon St. game last year.

I saw Boylen at the football game in Michigan last year, it's great that he went so far to support the school and even sat with us in the visiting section up on the 90th row. (He may have also made stops at Michigan State and perhaps a little longshot recruiting, but hey he was at the game). A couple of BYU fans were there too, in the visitors section and wearing their shiny new Quest shirts, and Boylen just smiled and said "you guys are everywhere!" And shook their hands.

He really gets into it with the opposing players as well. If every competitor could compete as hard as Boylen and not take it all as personal, the world of sports would be a much better place. He jaws with opposing fans and a real fun way and just makes the entire college hoops experience more enjoyable for all around him.
