So besides a 7 day a week job handling 100+ athletes, dealing with the missionary deal, dealing with coaches, boosters, watching dozens of hours of film, recruiting athletes, giving talks, doing talk shows, interviews...he's also supposed to be up on something in the NFL?Originally posted by WashingtonCoug View PostI just think here is the top level of your sport or profession. Now I don't necessarily want to spend all my waking hours watching or studying my profession all the time, but when I get a chance to see someone that is really really good at what I'm doing, I will definitely take the time to watch. I appreciate what they are doing.
I have no problem with not watching every Sunday, but to not know anything of the NFL and not care about it is crazy to me.
Okay.

Makes sense to me. I don't listen to Supreme Court oral arguments on my days off.Originally posted by WashingtonCoug View PostI just think here is the top level of your sport or profession. I'm not referring to Bronco, I'm referring to the player that knows nothing and cares nothing about the NFL.Originally posted by RockyBalboa View PostSo besides a 7 day a week job handling 100+ athletes, dealing with the missionary deal, dealing with coaches, boosters, watching dozens of hours of film, recruiting athletes, giving talks, doing talk shows, interviews...he's also supposed to be up on something in the NFL?
Okay.
If I'm a highly recruited athlete out of high school would I want to play for the coach that doesn't care about the NFL or would I want to play for the coach that is interested in the NFL?"To the man who only has a hammer, everything he encounters begins to look like a nail."

I know several players after playing little league all their life, followed by 4 years of high school, followed by 4 years of college ball are more than happy to be moving on with their life and care little to watch the NFL.Originally posted by WashingtonCoug View PostI'm not referring to Bronco, I'm referring to the player that knows nothing and cares nothing about the NFL.

I would bet those players did not love the sport that much either. They probably played it because they were good and it may have paid their way in college. I also realize that priorities may change along the way. They may get married or go on a mission and goals change. Football for 95% of these athletes is not the top priority nor should it be. I just think that if you are passionate about something you will care about the top level of whatever it is you're passionate about.Originally posted by RockyBalboa View PostI know several players after playing little league all their life, followed by 4 years of high school, followed by 4 years of college ball are more than happy to be moving on with their life and care little to watch the NFL.Last edited by WashingtonCoug; 10-05-2009, 02:03 PM."To the man who only has a hammer, everything he encounters begins to look like a nail."

And that would be a faulty assumption on your part. 3 of them rarely watch the NFL, but still follow their college teams avidly and one of them is a local high school coach.Originally posted by WashingtonCoug View PostI would bet those players did not love the sport that much either. This is a post I put on CB a couple years ago.Originally posted by RockyBalboa View PostAnd that would be a faulty assumption on your part. 3 of them rarely watch the NFL, but still follow their college teams avidly and one of them is a local high school coach.
I'm wondering if my experience is unique. I am good friends with 3 former Cougar football players. I would describe their fanhood as lukewarm at best. Where as I know 7 or 8 players from other Division 1 schools (primarily PAC-10) who all are typical fanatical alumni.
Of my 3 friends.
1. Was a walk-on who played a few downs in the 80's at the end of blowouts. He roots for BYU and will watch the games if he is home, but doesn't plan his day or schedule around any of the games.
2. A 3rd string receiver during the early 80's, he likes football in general but rarely watches any games. He will often ask me the score of the BYU game at church on Sunday
3. 2 year starter late 80's. Confesses he doesn't really like football that much. Has watched less than a half-dozen games live or on TV in the past 15 years. Interestingly he has 3 brothers who all played D-1 ball and all are the same way. They viewed it as a good way to get their college played for, but other than that have no love for the game.

So do they follow their team, becuase they feel that they are part of the team, or is it because they love the sport? Once again, I would bet they don't love the game, they are just connected to their team.Originally posted by RockyBalboa View PostAnd that would be a faulty assumption on your part. 3 of them rarely watch the NFL, but still follow their college teams avidly and one of them is a local high school coach."To the man who only has a hammer, everything he encounters begins to look like a nail."

Your avatar is simply terrific.Originally posted by Hot Lunch View PostI would probably go as far as to say that there are many college football coaches around the country that don't watch a lot of pro games. It is his day to take a break from it. All he does Monday through Saturday is watch, talk, plan and coach football. As much fun as football is, when you spend 10 to 12 hours a day doing something in regards to football I am sure any of us wouldn't mind doing something else one day a week. This is not uncommon at all for college coaches to not pay much attention to the games on Sunday.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”
