  • AL Cy Young

If anyone but Zach Greinke wins the AL Cy Young, it will be a bigger sham than Morneau winning the AL MVP at couple years ago.

He plays on a last place team, he was average at best in the middle of the year, I think a case can be made for Sabathia among others.

His stats are significantly better than Sabathia and anyone else. It is an individual award that he plays on a last place team should be irrelevant. For that matter, Sabathia shouldn't even finish 2nd in the voting. Felix Hernandez is more deserving than Sabathia.

      Greinke:
      ERA+ 204
      WHIP 1.065
      SO 224
      K/BB: 5.09
      HR/9: .5
      Win Shares:17
      VORP: 79.6

      Sabathia:
      ERA+ 134
      WHIP: 1.126
      SO: 186
      K/BB: 3.10
      HR/9: .7
      Win Shares: 16
      VORP: 59.5

It I was voting it would be 1) Greinke 2) Hernandez (A very distant 2nd); and, 3) Sabathia (a very distant 3rd). I won't be that surprised when Sabathia does win it because the BBWAA loves to look at meaningless stats like wins.

A pitcher on a losing team can win the Cy Young. Carlton won his first one with the '72 Philies. He won 25 games on a team that lost more that 90 games.

I personlly think that season was one of the greatest pitching performances of my lifetime. Definately on par with McClain's 31 win's and Gibson 1.12 ERA from the late 60's

This is from memory, maybe Funk can verify the stats

        EDIT

I looked up his stats from 72

        27 - 10, 1.97 ERA and the Phils went 59 - 97

I may be small, but I'm slow.

King Felix pitches against the Jays tonight and will likely get only one more start vs. the A's. Greinke should get 2 more starts vs. the Twins. This race is far from over. If Hernandez pitches a couple of gems and boost his W total to 18 and Greinke fizzles a bit (especially if he can't pick up any more Ws) their stats will be pretty close and I can see Felix getting the nod with 18 wins over Zack's 15. Their ERAs, WHIP and Opponents OPS would be very close, I don't think it would be that big a travesty if Felix finished strong and won it.

Right now a start against the A's is not necessarily a good thing for a pitcher. I don't know how the A's are doing it while being last in SLG%, but the offense has been great since the allstar break. A's have won 9 out of their last 11 games and are over 500 since the allstar break. They now have a positive run differential which is pretty amazing considering how bad they were at the break.

The stats are close, but Greinke is still better in every single meaningful statistic. It should be a no-brainer, which means the BBWAA are going to screw it up and give it to Sabathia. Wins should never even be in the discussion in talking about the Cy Young.

King Felix has more quality starts that is not a meaningless stat.

Agreed that isn't a meaningless stat, so he is better in one stat that matters. However, Felix Hernandez have one more quality start than Greinke certainly doesn't overcome Greinke being better in every other stat. Even though quality starts isn't a meaningless stat there are better stats for evaluating pitching like ERA+, K/BB ratio, and Win Shares. Greinke is better in these stats.
