Wait a week for the revisionist history version."The first thing I learned upon becoming a head coach after fifteen years as an assistant was the enormous difference between making a suggestion and making a decision."
"They talk about the economy this year. Hey, my hairline is in recession, my waistline is in inflation. Altogether, I'm in a depression."
"I like to bike. I could beat Lance Armstrong, only because he couldn't pass me if he was behind me."

Sounds like it is a two year deal.
It'll be interesting to see how he is used in that offense (if at all)."They're good. They've always been good" - David Shaw.
Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Philly is a great place for Vick to land and rehab his image.....fans are patient and supportive, no matter what....Donovan McNabb has zero problems sharing the spotlight with other teammates....and Andy Reid's job is secure, so he is free to experiment with the Wildcat offense this year, regardless of how that might turn out.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

in tribute to Michael Vick....does anyone here remember the "Football is Everything" ads that Nike ran several years back.
These were great commercials. The first is the intro to Briscoe HS football....it is a who's who if NFL talent at coaching and players levels.....Urban makes his appearance, Shula, Johnson, Corso, and players like LT and of course Michael Vick. Matt Leinart has a major speaking role in this and he was still at SC at the time, iirc.

This second one is another Briscoe High clip set to Spirit in the Sky. Has a very "Remember the Titans" vibe to it. Also, Jillian Barberie.....not bad back in the day....

PETA chimes in:
PETA and millions of decent football fans around the world are disappointed that the Philadelphia Eagles have chosen to sign a man who hanged dogs from trees, electrocuted them with jumper cables, held them underwater until they drowned in his swimming pool, and even threw his own family dogs into the fighting pit to be torn to shreds while he laughed. What sort of message does this send to young fans who care about animals and don't want to see them be harmed?
PETA certainly hopes that Vick has learned his lesson and feels truly remorseful for his crimes—but since he's given no public indication that that's the case, only time will tell. At this point, all Eagles fans can do is cross their fingers and hope that they won't ever have to explain to their sons and daughters what a "rape rack" is and why their favorite player was using one, as Falcons fans once had to.

Does this not count?PETA certainly hopes that Vick has learned his lesson and feels truly remorseful for his crimes—but since he's given no public indication that that's the case,

I wonder what PETA is looking for.
From the comments in this video, it seems a lot of people feel justice will only truly be served when Vick is eaten by dogs.
I wonder what the hierarchy is for outrage when it comes to mistreating animals.
Cricket fighting: probably not that outrage-worthy.
Flea fighting: ditto.
Snake fighting: Maybe?
Cat fighting: Yeah.
Lion fighting: Probably.

My personal sense is that by and large, football fans are bored with PETA's shtick.
PETA milked its 15 minutes when the Vick investigation was taking place....aided by Vick's lying and eventual confession.
At this point, PETA is piling on and I think will lose public sympathy. PETA did not protest when Vick took the construction job for $10/hr, so it seems that PETA's agenda is largely to deny rehabilitation to people that have paid their debt to society.....reminds me of ETB's pride talk...withholding forgiveness merely to justify injured feelings and keep another in your debt.
Vick lost millions (upwards of 50M or so?), he went to prison for 1.5 years, and he is now paroled and ready to go back to work. Let the guy have his second chance. What else is he trained to do? What else is he qualified to do? Why impede his ability to get back to work?Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Hasn't PETA lost any public sympanthy already for anything they say or do? I know that I have them on ignore whenever they say or do anything.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostMy personal sense is that by and large, football fans are bored with PETA's shtick.

I may be small, but I'm slow.

Well, PETA still holds sway. Some teams were undoubtedly scared away from Vick because of the potential for bad PR.....at the hands of PETA.Originally posted by happyone View PostHasn't PETA lost any public sympanthy already for anything they say or do? Ignoring these advocacy groups seems socially irresponsible. I wouldn't be overly proud to say, "I ignore anything said or done by [PETA, NRA, et al]." Why would you not listen to anything they say or do? They try to prevent cruelty to animals. Are you opposed to that goal? People like Candy Lightner of MADD have made a positive difference in society by advocating in the drunk driving arena. The same can be said for groups like the ACLU, NRA, Anti-Smoking, and others.
When these groups lose focus and begin to stray off message, that seems to be when the public loses taste. It is one thing to raise awareness. PETA is a great organization when it is raising awareness through educating the public. It is another thing to rabble-rouse in an effort to stay in the spotlight.........protesting at Pike's Fish Market, fighting Mike Vick's right to hold a legal job, throwing paint on celebrities that wear fur, etc. That gets annoying quickly.
PETA help bring the dog-fighting issue front and center over the past 2 years. It has helped educate the public. At this point, it is no longer raising any new awareness by harassing Mike Vick. PETA's efforts would be better spent working towards animal cruelty legislation, etc. Picket lines at a football stadium does nothing to help animals now.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

I guess my point is becase of the rabble rousing and taking such extreme stands on issues dealing with animal rights, it makes everything else they try to do fade into the backgound. This is esp. true when something they try to do needs to be said and brought to the public's attention.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostWell, PETA still holds sway. It is kind of like the group (I can't remember the name THe people for science in the public interest or something like that) that sends out warnings about food that you eat. Every couple of months they have another warning. They make it seem like everything you eat is going to kill you.
Just to be fair, the NRA has somewhat the same effect. Even when they make good points, all of the other stuff that has been said, makes those points hard to pick out.
After awhile people just start ignoring you and what have you accomplished. It is the "little boy who cried wolf" in action.Last edited by happyone; 08-14-2009, 12:35 PM.

Ignoring PETA is socially responsible, as PETA stopped trying to prevent cruelty to animals and cranked it up to "animals are more important than humans" many years ago.
It's not socially responsible to ignore the ASPCA."Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." - Winston Churchill
