  • Any Braves fans on this board?

As I haven't been paying close attention, I'm curious as to your opinions on what the heck happened to Jeff Francoeur. He went from being one of the more promising young talents in the NL - never missing games, a big bat and rocket arm - to being traded for Ryan Church of all people?

Frenchy seemed to be one of the more popular players in the Braves organization and at the time the trade happened, even Cox couldn't stand the guy.

    Seems like a bizarre situation.

The guy has never had an iota of plate discipline. Pitchers simply adjusted to him and he hasn't seemed to do anything to adjust back. He's still young, I hope he can figure it out.

I was thinking his lack of discipline might be a big reason, but sort of wondered if there was anything else. Now that I think about it, that's likely pretty much it. Hard to believe he's only 25.

I believe there is also quite a bit of friction left over from the stint he had in Double A last year.

I have also heard more than once that he lacked the drive to improve and was pretty lazy. I should note that I have NO idea if that's true, but it does appear that way. He still has a good arm though.

Does anyone know anything about Church?

I'm a big Braves fan. Watching Frenchy suck the last two years has been painful. The dude has absolutely no idea of what the strike zone is. You can easily get the guy out without throwing anything close to a strike. I think the Braves lost patience in him developing. Heck, Brian McCain worked with him three straight offseasons to try to help him. If he couldn't get him to do it, the change wasn't going to happen in Atlanta. I hate trading him to the Mets. This might be a wake up call for him and he finally apply some of his huge talents. I hate the thought of that talent being utilized in NY.

When a guy doesn't have any swing discipline, he's going to get exposed eventually. Slap hitters can sometimes get away with being free swingers, but power hitters won't last.

The organization completely mismanaged Jeff Francoeur. They kept him in the big league when he had no business being there. He needed to go back to the minors to develop some plate discipline, because he wasn't going to learn it in the majors.

Rob Neyer used to harp on the Braves all the time for the mistake of keeping him in the majors.

Vlad Guerrero being one exception I can think of. That guy can hit rockets off balls scraping the plate, but he's pretty much a freak. Even when Francoeur was hitting for power, he had abysmal on-base percentages hovering in the low .300s and high .200s. That's way too many outs from a guy who is supposed to be hitting in the heart of your order.

Even Vlad knows how to take a pitch. Francoeur just looks lost at the plate.

He kind of went Brad Komminsk, didn't he? Didn't live up to the hype.

By the way, what's it going to take to ever be able to see a Braves game in California? Now the TBS has gone all national with its baseball coverage, I haven't been able to see a single Braves game all year.

MLB package. I'm guessing with TBS not broadcasting Braves games, Directv had a nice little uptick in their MLB package last year. I bought and I bought again this year even though I'm only able to watch a couple of games a week.

And your Brad Komminsk comparison is dead on. They even look a little alike.

Vlad is different then Francouer, VLad is a good bad ball hitter. Pablo Sandoval is another example.

Just a quick bump to see if there is any chance for life in this thread.

Last post on 7/14/09...maybe that should have been my answer.
