  • Paging mpfunk: the 2016-2017 NHL Thread

    Let's get this going.

How about the kid for Toronto scoring four goals in his first game? There were some funny tweets from other players.
"What are you prepared to do?" - Jimmy Malone

    "What choice?" - Abe Petrovsky

Not bad for a 19 year old kid. Poor kid is a maple leaf though. Scores four goal and loses.

A nineteen year old kid from Arizona. It would be like someone from Canada coming down here, playing point guard in the NBA and becoming a two time MVP.

Are you predicting he'll commit highway robbery his last two seasons feigning injury (while not playing) to pay for his nashty divorce?

Yep. The US has some great up and comers. I'm a big Johnny Hockey fan. Kind of funny that they both play for Canadian teams.

Artemi Panarin signs a bridge deal with the Blackhawks.

2 years, 12 million dollars. It had to be done. The terms are reasonable. We now enter a new circle of cap hell. 59 million committed to 9 players next season.

A few thoughts as the season winds down.

It is a thing of beauty seeing a playoff field that does not include the Red Wings. Absolutely beautiful.

The President's Trophy race is going to be fun in the last 10-11 games of the season.

              Caps: 100 points - 11 games remaining. 45 ROW
Blue Jackets: 100 points - 11 games remaining. 45 ROW.
              Pens: 99 points - 11 games remaining. 42 ROW.
              Blackhawks 99 points - 10 games remaining. 44 ROW.

The metropolitan division is insane. It is basically the new central division. The current playoffs seeding format sucks. You have 3 of the teams fighting for the President's trophy in that division, and the team that doesn't win it will be rewarded with playing another one of those teams.

It is nice seeing how much the central has fallen. I like it being the Blackhawks as the elite team, not fighting it out with 3 other elite teams.

There are some metrics with the Blackhawks that concern me. The team has too much of a luck dependent PDO right now. Our possession numbers aren't the typical top of the league. However, something feels like it is coming together with this team. The Demi-God on the third line is perfect for him. Toews and Kane both playing at the top of their games. Great contributions from young players like Panik, Schmaltz, and Hartman. We have depth on the blueline again. I like our Stanley Cup chances this year. It feels a lot like the run up to the 2015 Stanley Cup playoffs.

So it looks like the Redwings will not make the playoffs this year?

Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

Really, that Red Wing logo may be the most disgusting thing in sports.

I'm going to be in Chicago for a few days in the beginning of May. I'm really hoping for a Blackhawks home game during that time. Playoff hockey would be a blast live.

That loss in Florida was brutal. Just brutal.

I don't think we are going to end up with the President's trophy, but we can get the best record out west. A 7 point cushion with 7 left to play is a pretty nice lead on Minnesota.

I really do think the Caps end up with the President's trophy.

It was ugly, but that call on Kruger leading to the 5-3 power play was brutal, let alone Hartman getting an unsportsmanlike to make the first penalty a double minor. Total embellishment on Kruger's penalty. The guy fell down as if tripped and Kruger's stick didn't even get in front of him or between the legs. Once they got it to three off the double minor and crappy call of Kruger, I saw the hawks start to coast a bit. If they didn't have a track record in come-from-behind wins this year I would be more concerned.

Expansion draft is looming and the ESPN "experts" are doing their mock drafts. http://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/1...ed-their-teams They have the Blackhawks losing either Kruger or TVR. Man, it would suck to lose either of those guys. It's hard to even know what I would prefer (as if we have a choice). I will wait and see how I feel after this playoff run. If TVR can step-up on the blue line, and play on par with Hammer and Oduya, then I hope the Vegas drafts Kruger. I don't ever want to be thin on the blue line again. On the other hand, if Kruger can spark the penalty kill (like he did in season's past) it could be tough to see him go. If they both step up, the Hawks win another cup, and whatever happens in Vegas won't hurt all that much in Lord Stanley's afterglow.
