    Tiger Woods is unbelievable...............

What a comeback, tied going in to 17 and he hits his approach at 17 within 8 feet for birdie, then hits his approach at 18 within 14 inches. He also hit 14 of 14 fairways today. He is fun to watch.

It's amazing to watch an athlete consistently live up to their hype (and occasionally exceed it).

Tiger has already pushed golf to an entirely new level. He's set the bar so high that it will take several years for someone to surpass him as the standard bearer for the sport.

The guy is a lot of fun to watch, especially when he focuses in on what needs to be done.

His scoring average is ridiculous. When he shot that 74 the other day, that was his lowest round in 48 rounds. Who does that? The guy is sick.

I can usually do 74. Plus, it only takes me 9 holes to do it. He needs all 18.

          Overrated.

My wife's uncle is one of the guys I golf with quite a bit. He used to talk about how good Nicklaus was when he came on to the tour and how everyone was amazed that someone better than Palmer came along. He now understands that amazement, as Tiger is doing what Nicklaus did.

I love watching Tiger play. The networks get big ratings during the majors when he's in contention because people love watching the best of the best.

But I also wish Tiger had to deal with more heavy hitters on the tour. Nicklaus had to deal with Palmer early in his career and then guys like Gary Player and Tom Watson (17 majors between the two) during his prime. Phil Mickelson is really the only guy that people will deem to have been an all-timer. But guys like Greg Norman, Johnny Miller and Hale Irwin had about the same amount of success in majors. If Tiger had to deal with the same quality players, you'd have to wonder if he would surpass Nicklaus's major wins record.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Maybe he is dealing with the same quality of players but he is winning so often that it is neutralizes there abilities. Tiger has won 67 tournaments which is unreal considering he is only 32. He is not giving anyone else a chance to step up.

One thing Tiger has done is he has forced players to get better. When he first came on tour and won The Masters by 12 strokes, he made every other golfer realize that they will have to up there game. It took a while, but in the last 3 years or so Tiger has had to really increase his level of play to get the wins. He's not clinching the tournaments after 3 rounds any longer then cruising on Sunday to get the trophy.

Of course, when he's on his game, he is clearly the superior golfer, but the rest of the tour is no longer intimidated by him.

Tiger currently has 14 majors. Nicklaus had 12 at the same age (33). There have been plenty of opportunities for other players to consistently step up, but no one has. Before Nicklaus turned Tiger's current age, Lee Trevino and Gary Player had both won four majors during Nicklaus's career up to that point. Between Trevino, Player and Watson, they won 23 majors- and all but two of those wins (two of Player's) occurred between the time Nicklaus won his first and last majors.

Mickelson has three majors, Singh has three majors and there's no one else of note. I just don't see anyone on the tour that approaches the quality of a Tom Watson or Gary Player. Singh and Mickelson are the equivalent of a Greg Norman (especially Mickelson).

Gary Player is only four years older than Nicklaus and they were rivals throughout the 60s through the mid 70s. Watson is a nine years younger than Nicklaus and he was the big rival in the late 70s and early 80s. Mickelson moderately fills the role of Player with his three major victories, though Player ultimately won nine majors and only one after Mickelson's current age. There's still time for a Tom Watson to arrive on the scene. Watson didn't win his first major until Nicklaus was 35

I certainly agree that Tiger really has no peer. That's just a testament to how good he really is. The up and comers these days are long hitters which was Tiger's big advantage. Now that he's not the only guy going 320+ off the tee, he'll get some competition. Of course, he's also going to be 10-15 years older than those guys when they start winning, so that will also factor in.

I was looking at this list and what really stands out to me is there are really only two, maybe three guys during Tiger's era that have provided him with some solid competition: Singh, Mickelson and Els.

If you go further down the list, only Adam Scott and Sergio Garcia stand out as anyone born in the late 70s to early 80s that have won much of anything thus far.

Pádraig Harrington should be added to your list. He has three majors but two of them came while Tiger was hurt. One other thing about Nicklas was I believe he finished second in majors something like twenty three times. First it was Palmer, Casper and Player and then came Miller, Weiskoph, Watkins, Trevino and finally Watson and Strange. I believe Tiger is the better golfer but Nicklas had to go up against a lot better competition.
