I wonder what the plaintiffs might have to say about the Mardi Gras Indians traditions.

I heard Raskopf on Mike Greenberg's show this morning. It was a pretty vanilla interview (I'd rather hear John Feinstein interview him), but he sounded extremely confident and said mostly the same as you quoted above.Originally posted by Surfah View PostThis appeal will last several years and be overturned again.

Feinstein hates Snyder (on the level that he hates Tiger Woods). Most of his interviews suggest that he has a huge ax to grind against the organization and the owner. To that end, I suppose an interview would be funny.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostI heard Raskopf on Mike Greenberg's show this morning. Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Yes, that's exactly my point. Feinstein is, uh, sort of passionate about the nickname issue.Originally posted by DrumNFeather View PostFeinstein hates Snyder (on the level that he hates Tiger Woods). He's passionate about punishing Dan Snyder...the nickname issue is a side bar to that fact.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostYes, that's exactly my point. Feinstein is, uh, sort of passionate about the nickname issue."They're good. They've always been good" - David Shaw.

Whatever his motives, I think we both agree that such an interview would have fairly significant entertainment potential.Originally posted by DrumNFeather View PostHe's passionate about punishing Dan Snyder...the nickname issue is a side bar to that fact.I'm like LeBron James.

Because apparently the organization doesn't give a shit about the fact that some people are offended by the name. They feel it's an honorable nickname and they don't use it in an offensive way.Originally posted by Green Monstah View PostWhy not just change the name to the Washington Warriors? How about just Washington Reds?
I dont get how the Utes can get away with it. I dislike the argument "Well we give them scholarships and they give us permission." It smacks of buying off a poor rural tribe. And not even the entire tribe-- just the ruling council. I agree that Ute is not as bad as Redskin, which is derogatory. Sooner or later, both will go.Last edited by Katy Lied; 06-19-2014, 08:20 AM.

What if, in addition to scholarships, they also throw in alcohol and pick-up trucks?Originally posted by Katy Lied View PostHow about just Washington Reds?

What are we "getting away with"? We have the tribe's permission to use the name.Originally posted by Katy Lied View PostI dont get how the Utes can get away with it.
First, the University of Utah refuses to "pay" to use the name. We offer scholarships and other benefits to Ute tribe members in exchange for use of the name. I don't see why this is "buying off" a tribe? What else would you propose that we offer to the tribe? They don't have to give their permission, it is their choice. Who else are we suppose to negotiate with other than the council as there are multiple Ute tribes? I view it as an honor to recognize one of the native tribes of Utah, but if they do not view it as an honor then they can refuse to allow the name to be used. It is pretty simple.I dislike the argument "Well we give them scholarships and they give us permission." It smacks of buying off a poor rural tribe. And not even the entire tribe-- just the ruling council.
*I do acknowledge that their needs to be some sensitivity training to students and fans on dress and actions that are offensive to the Tribe. I don't think these people do it to to be derogatory (just the opposite) but that doesn't mean it still isn't offensive.
Using the proper name of a tribe is not as bad as using a derogatory term?! I am glad that we have that clarification.I agree that Ute is not as bad as Redskin, which is derogatory.
I agree.Sooner or later, both will go."Friendship is the grand fundamental principle of Mormonism" - Joseph Smith Jr.
