Alex Smith lost? Is he the one who gave up 45 points?

He's the one whose offense could muster just two FGs in the last 28 minutes of the game. When you're playing on the road against a QB who doesn't lose close games, that is unacceptable and you will lose most of the time. And yes, he lost.

In a one-point loss, sounds like the defense played well enough to give the team a chance, too.

I couldn't believe they were in it at all with Charles going out after like 5 snaps. And then they lose the 2nd string back some time in the 3rd q I think. I almost feel bad for them.

It was a very Romo-esk performance for Alex Smith. He had a fantastic game moving the ball up and down the field en route to 4 TDs and a monstor lead. No question, the defense deserves the bulk of the criticism here, but there were three plays that will ultimately end up defining Smith in that game because they lost. The strip fumble (leading to a score), the missed wheel route to the RB (leading to a fg - if they get a TD there, we aren't talking about a Colts comeback), and of course, the grounding call at the end of the game. For QBs, the evaluation is always simple, it doesn't matter what you do in the game if you don't make the critical play. That is why nobody cares about Luck's 3 picks. The lasting image for him will be recovering the fumble and taking it in. Many many poor performances are wiped away by winning, and likewise for great performances and losing. It's just the way it is in the National Football League (now I sound like Mike Shanahan).

Alex Smith's play and Luck's mistakes put them up by 28 points in the first place. Luck's play, horrendous defense, inept game management by Andy Reid and Smith's inability to make plays for most of the second half is what caused them to choke. Losing a 28 point lead requires a certain kind of choking talent.

No, the Chiefs offense was allowed to advance to the next round of the playoffs. The defense however has been eliminated. I shut it off when they were tallying up the score for the kickers so I have no clue if the special teams won or not.

The announcers didn't mention it, but he was flagged for offsides on the play. That's still crazy that it went right between his arms.

He also jumped offsides, so even had he gotten a piece of the ball, SF would've re-kicked it. But yeah, a little close for comfort.

On the replay it looked like every Niner was being held. Still not sure how he escaped that mass of humanity though. There were bodies all over him.

There's only two guys that make plays like that -- Rodgers and Eli Manning. It's infinitely more maddening when Eli does it because he's so average most of the time and then pulls these plays out of his ass. Rodgers is the best player in the league at least. That was an amazing play.
