2012 NFL Free Agency Thread/Peyton Manning Thread

Not sure about adding to the Andrew Luck Sweepstakes thread.

There appears to be two possible destinations for Peyton Manning at this point based on the fact that he's personally visited their facilities: Denver and Arizona. He visited with people from both Tennessee and Miami, but didn't visit their facilities. As one ESPN writer mentioned, I have a hard time believing he'll sign with a team without visiting their facilities.

As for the choice between Denver and Arizona -- Arizona has to be the obvious choice, right? He'd be playing with Larry Fitzgerald. Arizona has a good coaching staff. Beanie Wells had a decent year, though he doesn't seem much like a back that catches passes out of the backfield. But most importantly, I think older quarterbacks play better in warmer venues. Brett Favre experienced one last great season in Minnesota and he was 40. Kurt Warner got the Cards to the Super Bowl and he was something like 38 or 39 years old. Playing 8 games in AZ combined with playing road games at San Francisco, Seattle and St. Louis seems a lot better than playing 8 games in Denver and a game in Arrowhead every year.

I don't know if there's any truth to the rumors that Manning wants to stay in the AFC because of his brother -- I think they're false. Arizona makes a ton of sense and Manning can look at Warner's success and think he has a shot at another ring.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Doesn't AZ have one of the worst O-lines in the NFL? I think that's a huge consideration for Manning at this point.

Half the teams in the league supposedly have the worst o-line in the NFL. Indy truly had a crappy line but a QB like Manning forced opposing teams to rush fewer defenders because he killed them on the blitz. Crappy QBs make o-lines look bad because they hold onto the ball too long and they're incapable of punishing teams that blitz.

So if Denver gave up nearly 25% fewer sacks than AZ, and with equally crappy QBing, then you would agree that would be a markedly better O-line for Manning to play behind.

The Jets signed Sione Pouha to a 3 year extension, which will make another former Ute Paul Soliai a rich man as well.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Not if Denver were throwing fewer passes and had Tebow running around. Fitzgerald and playing in that AZ stadium will trump any marginal difference that the Denver o line would offer.

Rockies first baseman Todd Helton - formerly QB at Tennessee and acquaintance of Peyton Manning - didn't play in Sunday spring training in Arizona reportedly because of meeting with Peyton Manning. Blood (especially southern friendship) is thicker than water.

Denver gave up only 1.8 sacks per game with Orton at QB and 3.8 with Tebow at QB. Prorated over an entire season, 1.8 spg would be top 3 in the league and that would only improve with Manning.

Fits is great. I've been on the Fitz train since way back when people thought Roy Williams was he best WR in the draft. That said, Manning is good enough to make good receivers into great receivers. He did it with Harrison and Wayne, and he could do it with Thomas and Decker.

In short, Fitz and the field won't help that team rush for 2000 yards, which Denver is already built to do. That And solid pass protection will be way more beneficial to Manning than an indoor (but still grass) field and a great WR.

Free agency won't start tomorrow. You heard it here first. Redskins or Cowboys will get it enjoined, a deal will be brokered for a smaller cap penalty and it will start a day to two late. This is my hope anyway. The Skins are getting screwed.

I have gone back and forth between loving Larry for being the Mailman of the Cardinals and thinking how sad it is that he will never win because one of the best talents to ever play WR in the NFL wastes away in Arizona.

Arizona has cap trouble apparently, as in right now they're over the cap. Denver on the other hand has a ton of cap space. That obviously could be determinative.

I'm willing to bet that Manning would jump at playing for the Niners, but he and Alex Smith have the same agent. So its unlikely they even sent feelers out on Manning.

Also, I really hope the Niners resign Josh Morgan. Going into the season with a healthy morgan and Moss would make me feel a lot better about the WR corps than I did at the end of last year.

Just to expand on my last post, Denver is something like 42 million under the cap. They have the money to easily land Manning and one of the top free agent WRs. They could also eschew bringing in Jackson or Wallace and save some money by bringing in Reggie Wayne. Denver already has a potentially great WR in Demarius Thomas.

AZ released Levi Jones, which apparently saves them 17 Mil in cap space.

                          Saints resigned Marques Colston.

Miami trades WR Brandon Marshall to Chicago for two 3rd round picks.
