  • Seattle Suuuuuuuupersonics v2.0?

The mayor and Chris Hansen (not the Chris Hansen that busts child predators) have set up a press conference to announce their plans for a new arena in Seattle. They still have to present the arena to the Seattle City Council, which isn't a slam dunk. However, things look really good.

The City/Hansen will have to buy back the name and history for the Sonics from Clay Bennett. If Bennett isn't willing to sell, I vote we name the new franchise the bombers. Would that be insensitive towards the people of OKC?

Seattle must be abuzz this morning at the thought of getting an NBA team back in town that will continue the tradition of not winning championships.

They should build a place with some parking this time.

That was a loooooooooong time ago. It's not like they won it all recently, like 1984.

True, but I guess it's better than never winning one at all.

Not insensitive at all. Are you going to name them the McVeigh Bombers? Bombers seems like a good team name to me. But not a good "take that" to Mr. Bennett.

The Kings should move there. Or the Jazz
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

They are talking about building this near the CenturyLink Field and Safeco Field, so parking should not be a problem.

But I have to ask, why is this facility slated to cost $400MM? That is more than either Safeco or CL Field. It seems Hansen is fronting about $280M himself, with another $200+ coming from private donors. I am glad this won't be a city- or state-funded arena, we don't need another of those (we are still paying off the Kingdome for the next 15+ years...).

So which team would be preferred? The Phoenix Coyotes and Sacramento Kings are the most likely targets. I wouldn't mind seeing the Jazz organization move up here, but don't see that happening.

If the Kings don't move, I think the Timberwolves and Bobcats are probably up next. The Hornets don't have an owner, but Stern has made enough comments about keeping the team in NO that I don't see them moving.

If it IS the Kings, do we want to Maloofs to move them up here or would we prefer a new local ownership? I recognize the Mariners have about the worst owners in baseball, but there must be a better owner group somewere in the Seattle talent pool.
