Fantasy Baseball Drafting Guides and Strategy

Back in the day (when I had time to watch an insane about of baseball), I used to scoff at the idea of using fantasy drafting guides. After the worst fantasy baseball season of my life (in two leagues!), I'm ready to swallow my pride and start looking for third-pary assistance.

What strategies and/or printed guides do you use? How do you use your picks in the late rounds, when almost no one is a recognizeable name?

One simple tip that always seems to work for me is to only draft NL starting pitchers, especially if you end up picking in later rounds. Also obviously taking guys that have eligibility for multiple positions is always nice so you can fill as many roster slots as possible on off-days.

And the obvious strategy I've always used: never pay for saves. I won a pretty competitive roto league two years ago after drafting the last pure closer left on the board and taking one of the top five set-up men, with the aim to add saves through free agency. I got 11 points in the save category.

That's a good strategy but you have to be ready to pick up the guys who move into closer roles (through injury or demotion of opening day closers). But I agree there are always a few guys who go undrafted or are available very late who end up with a ton of saves.

I'm an active owner, so that's never been an issue for me.
