So scary. I think the organizers of the event are going to catch hell.

      Why is that?

My heart goes out for Dan's wife and his family.

        Horrible. Only 12 laps in.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I don't see why they would.

Those guys know they are strapping themselves into a death trap. But they get paid to do it.

In an effort to draw attention to IndyCar, the CEO created a challenge to any non-full time series racer to participate in the race. Indy offered a $5 million dollar bonus to the winner. In fact, the CEO said if the race didn't pull a certain rating he'd resign. So it was nothing more than a publicity stunt to save their fledgling league. Before Pastrana got all broke at X-Games he was going to enter the race. This is actually why Wheldon raced. He didn't have a car or team this year and was eligible for the $5 million dollar prize if he won. The prize money attracted drivers who don't race regularly in Indy. And they allowed too many cars to race. They had a 34 car field on a 1.5 mile oval that was supposed to have about 31 max. The commentators were talking about the "dirty air" caused by so many cars in the race and the dangerous conditions.

It is really too bad about Dan. I saw him race in Texas a few times and he was a great competitor. He will be missed.

With IRL, when there is a wreck, it is usually bad. When my wife was in the news business she was covering an IRL race in Charlotte and there was a bad wreck where a tire and some other car parts flew into the crowd. It killed three of the spectators including a nine year old girl if I remember correctly. It was pretty bad.

With NASCAR when there is a bad wreck you usually see the drivers walk away from the crash. In fact, Jimmy Johnson hit the wall very hard this weekend and walked away...

He is most likely not going to win this year because of that crash. I guess SI put a curse on him given he was on the front cover this week.
