  • NBA Playing Time

Should NBA players be able to play more minutes than they did 10 years ago? More than they did 20 years ago? Do we have a bunch of basketball playing pansies like we have in baseball with pitch counts?

With the chartered traveling, improved facilities, better equipment, and drastically improved injury treatment why aren't we seeing more star players averaging 40-42+ mpg?

Because team owners don't want to play their star players into the ground, esp since most owners realize that they dont have a realistic shot at a title. They would rather prolong their careers and make money off of them and limiting their minutes is one effective way of doing that. shocker.

Pansies. Not the owners. The players who apparently are run into the ground if they play 40 mpg even with all the advances in making sure they are pampered.

Look at Malone and Stockton. Didnt SLoan take them out in the second quarter like clockwork? Jax takes Kobe out to start the 4th and usually leaves him out until the 8 minute mark. My guess is that many times, these guys want to keep playing (how tired can you be in the second quarter?). But the mandate is to rest them, in part to prolong their careers.

The luxury of chartered travel is overrated. Long flights suck. There are also more back to backs now than there were 20 years ago.

Credit to the old school players that played in Chucks. How they lasted an entire season without blisters killing their feet and life-ending ankle injuries, I will never know.

This makes me wonder whether owners are using straight-line, units-of-production, or another depreciation method. Or do they just amortize the player's value based on the salary liability in the contracts?

The highest paid athletes can't throw baseball more than 90 times every 5 days. I don't think basketball players are quite to the "pansy" stage yet.

Depends on the owner's capitalization policy. Some players are probably completely expensed in their first year. Gordon Hayward, for example.

I don't think so at all. The luxury isn't really in the flight itself, though that certainly has something to do with it.

Your boy Bron Bron disagrees with you, he should be playing fewer minutes.

If baseball were played once a week so that a star pitcher were as important as a star QB, baseball might actually be interesting.

Since throwing a baseball is such a natural arm motion.
